Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cheap Bike Shoes

I was at REI yesterday picking up a water bottle and some hiking gear. I decided to look at their bike shoes and they have a pair for under $100. I didn't think I could get into the bike shoe game for less than $100, so this was a bit of a surprise. Every once in a while I see a pair of shoes for sale on Craigslist but 1) they are not my size and b) I don't want to wear someone else's shoes. That being said, I am on a budget. I have brand new pedals and everything for it, got them for free, but I do not have shoes, so they just are hanging out. Anyone know of bike shoes for under $100? I'm not looking for the best, just something.

Bikes: Have two wheels

Shimano, Giro, Northwave, Serfas all have shoes at or below the $100 mark. Probably other too. I generally look for sales at my LBS. For instance, my current road shoes (Shimano) were 50% off, so I paid well under $100.

If you're cool with buying online look at nashbar, performance, Jenson USA or Sierra Trading Post to name a few vendors and wait/look for discount codes. With a 20%+ discount on top of a sale price it's not uncommon to find decent shoes for half off msrp - might be last years color/model, but who cares.

As far as sizing, you may have to do a bit of research online for user review comments etc and sometimes even order two sizes to compare and return the other pair. Some people don't like doing this and prefer the LBS for shoes, but frankly I live in NYC and even here it's hit or miss finding much in the way of choice for bike shoe models/makes let alone whether they're even going to have my size in stock to try on and compare.

I like Giro and Shimano, personally. Shimano have several different price points levels and offer good bang for your buck.

I shop the closeout racks at my LBS. I think I paid $49.95 for my Bontrager RL shoes that were 3 years old. Something like 72% off MSRP.

I paid $28 for my last pair. Only have up to size 41 left, and you gotta do SPDs though.

Bikes: 1990 Romic Reynolds 531 custom build, Merlin Works CR Ti custom build, super light Workswell 066 custom build

Performance Forte brand shoes can be bought in local stores and are often on sale. Easy to get in below $100. Quite decent quality.

I bought my Specialized for $89 on sale at LBS a few years ago
Just picked up some North Waves with Speedplay Zeros off CL for $100, like brand new
Who ever set this poor ba$+ard up had them all the way forward, and to the inside
He must have been riding on his big toe, explains why cycling wasn't for him

Bikes: Peugeot Ventoux PH501, Vitus 979/Campy C-Record & Chorus, and TBD. :)

I just ordered a pair of Lake shoes from Hashbar for under $100 shipped.
In size 46, not some odd ball size that were never designed to actually fit a human foot.

Wiggle.co.uk also has some dhb brand shoes for $50. This includes mountain, road and tri models.
Ribblecycles.co.uk has some Sidis available just over $100 - Some as low as ~$120. I got a good deal on Sidis a couple months ago... and they are having a sale on Campagnolo this weekend!!

Check out the returned items section of nashbar. They have a pretty good amount of shoes there. If you don't want something that's been returned, they have inexpensive shoes that aren't returned. I think I paid around 50 bucks for my shoes and I love them.
