Century = Marathon ?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is a century ride (100 miles) by bike the equivalent to running a marathon? I am curious to hear everyone's opinions on this topic!
Not even close.

I've did both last year. It was tougher to recover from the marathon than from the century. My body rarely take a pounding on the bike, when I'm running I always start to hurt after 2.5 hours - Regardless of the pace.

I don't think that's the answer to the question. Marathons, at least to me, take much longer to recover from. That's because of the pounding your legs take. But that doesn't mean they are any harder.

i personally think a fairer comparison would be comparing cycling a century to running a half marathon, but comparing cycling and running is like comparing apples to oranges. it's MUCH easier for a good runner to be a good cyclist than it is for a good cyclist to be a good runner. i rode my first century my first year cycling, but that time i was lucky if i could run 5 miles tops cause i just didn't run much...
