Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise Reports - July 26/27

Are all of you in the northern hemisphere enjoying the hot summer weather and getting out for long rides. How about those of us in the southern hemisphere ... have we been able to get out and enjoy the short daylight hours? Tell us all about it.

Saturday - 37.9 km in the Richmond area on a lovely, sunny, warmish day with light winds. Most of the route was relatively flat or low rollers, but there was one challenging climb (for me ... I should have brought my inhaler).

I got out for a 200k today. It was rather hilly... and it completed my first SR series. Pretty stoked with that.

Rode today with my club to a farm that has acres of sunflowers. It's an annual event. Our group did 66 mi. with 4,000 ft. of climbing at 15 mph. At age 68 this was a good ride for me.

That was a very good ride, Bruce19!!

My ride was 58 miles of mostly flat land with a nasty little climb at mile 56. There were some faster riders that kept upping the pace; people were dropping off the back the whole time. Me included. I think the first 40 miles was done at an 18mph pace. We finally got all split up and I finished the last 18 miles by myself.

My longest ride of the year, so far.

Sunday - a really nice ride along the beach and through the countryside ... and relatively flat too. It's one of Rowan's favourite routes. All up 45.04 km ... the longest ride we've done since mid-April. That makes 82.94 km for the weekend.

That was my 8th ride on Machak, my Marinoni Ciclo since he returned ... and by far the longest ride. We bought Machak a new Brooks saddle shortly after he returned, and it is not quite broken in. However, it was great to ride Machak again.

70 miles, hot.

I set this up as a prep for the upcoming century. Group of 6, but there was a general lack of pace-line/drafting skills or interest, so while I felt like I was going pretty fast, the average speed was as if it had been solo.

Nice outing, 'tho, with the grass hills having turned a beautiful golden color. We did have one rider turn back with a mechanical, and another get a yellow jacket down his jersey & multiple stings.

In the afternoon/evening, went to watch the annual criterium race. Very exciting. The wind generated by the pack practically blew my hat off.

Sun: did a goofy thing and entered in a sprint Triathlon. I was a lifeguard so i can swim but not fast, I ran track in HS so i used to be able to run very well. biking has been my thing the past 8 years or so. Today.. epic surf conditions for the swim.. like shoulder height at the break. luckily it was only 1/4 mi and i didn't suck in too much water or get kicked in the face. staggered out of the water and was at home on the bike.. rode between 21-22avg for 11mi and passing many of the swimmers ahead of me. Got off the bike and felt ok running for the first mile and my stomach rejected all of the bouncing it isn't used to and i had to slow the pace but still had a decent time for only running twice this year. got 13th out of 30 in the 30-35 age group so i'm happy about it. could have probably pushed the bike harder but I was hoping i'd be able to do a decent run after so i saved some juice. 2 of my friends won the mens overall and womens overall respectively so i was psyched for them, my gf had a rough swim but a good bike and run so i was happy for her too

3.7 miles, in my hilly neighborhood. Still getting used to new-fangled clipless pedals, and fell over in the driveway before I took off, drive side. I think I slightly bent the rear hanger, and there was some visible blood, but I am glad to be back on my bike again. I'll bend the hanger back straight I guess.

~45 miles and 2500' climbing. Did a route for a RAMROD packet pickup group ride, even though we're not riding RAMROD on our tandem. We were lucky this year and got #682 on the waiting list. Stoker cheered. Stoker's sprained ankle has completely healed, so for the past three weeks we've been doing a hard day hike the day after our hard group ride. This has resulted in excruciatingly painful legs for a few days after, but also in some serious performance jumps on the bike. Highly recommended. Bank the pain. 12 Strava PRs today, all on climbs. Our current training goal is a 13 day backpack in the high Sierras next month.

Monday ... 2 km walk at lunch + 4.8 km walk after work with Rowan along the foreshore in the dark.

If it hadn't been quite dark out there, this is what we would have seen. As it was, we could hear the waves being kicked up by the increasing wind this evening.

Saturday I had planned the usual S. Tampa excursion. After about 6 miles the back tire goes flat. I find a big piece of glass, dig it out, do a road side repair and start up again. Several miles later the back tire starts to slowly leak. By now I decide to turn back for home, but I have to stop every few miles and pump up the tire. Not fun but I limp home. Later in the day at home I do a more extensive exam of the tire and find a tiny shard of glass was still in the cut. Grrrrrr, I get it all sorted out in the end. Sunday to make up for the lost ride on Saturday I decided to go deep into St. Petersburg via Shore Acres and Snell Is. to N. Shore Park. It was about 52 miles. The longest ride I’ve done in about a year. It was the perfect day for it except for the high temps.

You must of gone the long way around alex ...I think going from west SJ to San Mateo (Hwy92) is only about 25 miles for me (one way)..Palo Alto is a lot closer

Personally I did a fast for me, 37 mile ride into the Los Altos hills on Sunday. Sadly only 1 cool car on the ride ...a late 50 something Corvette. The ride into the Los Altos hills/Portola Valley is ususally good for a couple of Ferrari/Lambos given all the Google/Facebook ....etc money up there

Sunday I did about 20 casual miles(32k) with the Performance bike group ride, then solo back through downtown to run up and down a few parking garages for some makeshift "hill work"
Ended up with 43 miles/69km
