WhyFi 08-04-14 08:00 AM

Wife has the day off and is meeting up with friends (boy in tow) before and after the boy's nap, which leaves me with the better part of the day to myself. The last two times this has happened, I went out on 80-milers, but the foot discomfort is getting worse (and I think that I'm changing my stoke to lessen the foot pain but that's causing problems elsewhere). Instead, I think that I'll take the day off, go see a movie in the theater (a rarity) and maybe stop at the LBS to pick up the inserts and wedges for my shoes and see how that works out. If that doesn't work, I guess it's podiatrist time.

That's what I'm talkin' about. Worst cycling city in the USA.

Those muffulettas are big, but I don't think that you're supposed to eat an entire one by yourself.

Ok, I am afraid of HP. She could put me down.

Seems like a single serving to me. Nice mid-ride snack.

I have some NYC friends that are in love with NO. They go down there multiple times per year for cocktail events, or summat. Having bartenders know your name is one thing, and it's kind of nice. Having bartenders know your name in a city 1000 miles away is another thing entirely. Having a bar name a drink after you (no, really) in a city 1000 miles away is just... a different order of weird.

That looks like a small one. That said, we should see what the "cracking" guy thinks about this as a mid- or post-ride snack.

If you have to ask, you don't deserve to know. ;)

Muffelattas are very much like sex. There is no such thing as a bad one. But the ones from the Central Grocery are the best. Sublime. Funny how many people try to screw them up with extra meat and cheese. It is very much about the balance between the bread, meat, cheese, and olive salad. Don't mess with perfect.

By the way, most big cities have the ingredients to make a very respectable one. Not totally authentic, but very respectable.

Here is the blueprint:
Capacolo ham
Genoa salami
Mortadella (aka bologna) with pistachios
Ementhaler Swiss cheese (yes, Swiss cheese, not Provolone, not Mozzarella)
Mufflelatta round bread with sesame seeds or any crusty baguette type bread
Olive salad (mixed olives and finely chopped giardinara vegetables marinated in olive oil, garlic, oregano, no vinegar)

Layer all the meats and cheese on the bread. Dress with the olives salad. DO NOT HEAT IT IN ANY WAY. It is not a toasted sandwich. EVER.

Show restraint in all the ingredients. The bread is just as important as everything else.

Best at room temperature. Enjoy with a Barq's root beer out of the bottle or a Diet Barq's out of the can.

Your friends are strange.

But as much as I hated living there, I still enjoy visiting the place. Best food in the USA, good nightlife, great attitude (when you are a tourist). But the grime/puke smell and nastiness of the people gets to me after about 3 days.

This is why you will surely perish one day blithely riding your bike in the rain.

That one looks like it came from Schlotzky's, a fast food knock off. But I will stand behind my statement that there is no bad one, but just barely. Supposedly this guy Schlotzky was in NO and fell in love with the sandwich. Went back to Austin and opened a restaurant. The rest is history. The other sandwiches are much better than the so called Original which is the Muffelata knock off. I think they came up with it on the telephone. One guy standing in Central Grocery in NO describing it and the other guy in Austin trying to figure out what to do. Round bread, check. Salami, check. Ham, check. Cheese, check. Olives, check. What an abomination. Black canned California olives, yellow cheese, pizza dough bun, boiled ham. It is a joke.

This is quite true. I always wonder a little bit over all the hand-wringing over methods of execution via lethal injection. Just call in a veterinarian. They'll get the job done in under a minute. I have several specific combos of drugs I might choose in various scenarios. Why all the angst?

Yes. Yes they are. Going by their fb posts, they spend (what I would consider to be) ridiculous amounts of money on dining and drinking. Also, found it -

I couldn't have said it better.

Marcus Theaters have a Tuesday special where $5 gets you a ticket and if you've signed up for their free membership deal you get a free popcorn. We like to go to the Rosemount one since they have those awesome leather reclining seats that are super comfortable. Too bad it's not Tuesday...

The sell halves as well as whole one. My wife and I split a half.

I live very close to Southdale and the AMC theater there is pretty decent. I should be able to catch matinee pricing, but that could be anywhere from $5-$12 depending upon showtimes and theater type (regular/3D/IMAX 3D). My wife digs popcorn, I'm not much of a fan.

I like popcorn and my wife doesn't so I get both the free popcorns.

I work about 4 miles from Southdale.

One of the many office buildings off of 494? If I worked off of that stretch, I'd be tempted in to Culver's fries and shakes all too frequently.
