HELP - Garmin 705 GCD file needed - 3.0 or 3.1
I've searched the web for 3.0 and 3.1 files w/o success. Maybe I can spend more time and dig deeper and find it. OR I can ask here.
Progress stinks sometimes!
Thank you much!
Progress stinks sometimes!
- I upgraded to 3.3 (Garmin Express didn't work, so I copied in the 3.3 GCD file, per Garmin tech suggestion) and my 705 stopped working (splash screen when I turn it on but NEVER - days -gets beyond that)
- So I restored 3.0, reset it, reloaded preferences, and it worked again
- I decided to try 3.3 again. Same results. OK, I give up, I will go back to 3.0
- But somehow my 3.0 file has become corrupted (to the point I cannot move or rename the file in Windows Explorer)
- I've installed Garmin Express again - it couldn't find my device (even though the icon at top shows "Edge 705 connected" with a green checkmark AND Connect screen / Upload could find it).
- So I restarted Express, removed and reconnected the 705.
- Then Express had a problem (an unexpected error). I restarted and this time it found it. And this time, for the first time ever, the "Install All" button worked. Status line reads "Installing 1 item... Please stand by until software update is complete." Hooray! Maybe doing the update this way will succeed. Nope - it's been over an hour. Now I notice "Show Details" and there's a message "Waiting for other updates to complete." BOO!
Thank you much!

Sorry, but you have just found out the worst aspect of Garmin devices, their software. Nothing but aggravation. I gave up on their automobile GPS navigstion systmes for just that reason. RAHHHHDICULOUS.

+1 on the bad software. Add to that, I'm not sure there's any reason to update the software on a 705 anymore. Software updates generally either add new functionality or stabilize bugs with new devices. Since the 705 has long been discontinued, new software won't really provide any benefit.
At least at one point, you could download ZIP files directly from Garmin and unzip them into the appropriate directory and it would work. But, unfortunately, when firmware updates of any device go bad, they can end up "bricked."

OP here -
Garmin forum actually got back to me and pointed me to the correct file (I think). So I was able to load the Version 3.1 GCD and do a Hard Reset. Unfortunately it's still not working.
Thank you all. I will try it again in the morning after I reformat the drive in the 705. I guess I don't have much to lose, since it is useless now. My eyes are bleary - it's been a long, hard day.
