I am pretty happy with my Wahoo Tickr.

There are at least a dozen riders I've gotten to know through Strava that I wouldn't know if our only contact was occasionally crossing paths on the road or being 2 out of 400 racers at a race. I can't say the same for MMR or RWGPS.

Completely agree with this. Given the features and the UI, I am happy to pay $60/year for them to keep doing what they are doing. GarminConnect frustrates the hell out of me now. Strava has become primary for me while uploads to garmin are just in case they get their act together down the road.

It's really too bad Garmin and Strava can't find a way to get together. The new Garmin 1k is sweet, and so many of its features would be super cool with Strava rather than wasted on GC. I honestly don't know why Garmin is wed to their sh*tty software; it sucks. Even their dedicated GPS car nav units look like POS next to smartphone systems. Poor. Same with Cycleops and their PowerAgent, but at least they seem to understand that they'll never go anywhere on the social side and dropped their failed Training Camp effort.

They're together! You can link your Garmin and Strava accounts and your rides are automatically uploaded to Strava.

I think some are looking for more integration. Imagine if your garmin could tell you how far you are behind a leader, in real time, on a certain strava segment.

What does Strava do that Garmin Connect cannot/does not do?

Strava has segments...Whereas Garmin Connect is an utter ghost town for segments. Abject. Ghost town.

There are dozens of segments in my city on Strava...Connect has THREE. Garmin should have saved their money and not bothered creating a Strava-clone that will by all looks never ever take off.

It can, you can port Strava segments to fit files and race the segments real time as they come on your E1K:

http://gniza.org/segments/#/segment/3410331

Only downside is that like Connect segments the leaderboards do not auto-update...but the dev claims to be working on something like that. Garmin limitations of 50 segments on device still apply IIRC.

beatlebee 10-22-14 07:51 PM

@Marcus_Ti

^So you are telling me that on a specified segment, my garmin can tell me, while I am riding, I am 2 minutes behind where the leader of this segment was when he KOM'd it? So then I know to pick up my pace. And then I get an update after some amount of time that says that I am now only 1 minute behind the leader, etc.

One premium thing I miss is heatmap, which used to be a standalone free web app 'til Strava bought it. I only want that because of a kooky goal of mine - to ride every mile of every road in the county.

Perhaps there was more to the original app, but I use Strava's heatmap (free) to find new rides:

With a ported segment on my Edge 1000

-I'll get distance-to-segment alerts popups and tones @ 100-150m before a segment
-The segment paths will appear highlighted on the OSM map (riding them or not IIRC).
-Once at segment start, 2 extra screens: segment and virtual partner get enabled.
-You'll get virtual partner cues if the partner finishes before you.
-You'll get a popup at the actual end of the segment telling you how you did compared to KOM/best.

By default the segment screen will show the KOM holder's time at the top, or with a touch your personal best time (only one of these two, you MUST specify the KOM and/or YOUR personal best when porting). By default the 2 data fields at the bottom will show segment-distance to go, and rolling time behind/in-front-of the selected KOM (personal best or KOM)

Virtual partner screen will show by default distance behind selected KOM/personal-best and segment-distance.

NOTE: It is a bit buggy. Highly technical leadups to segment starts and GPS location EPE (error) can bug segment start. Like say a short switchback climb to a MUT T-intersection with the segment start being close to one of the switchback points (I have this scenario locally).

NOTE2: And, as already noted, segment KOMs/personal bests do not auto-update on the device...you must manually re-port the segments (as of now).

NOTE3: Also sometimes I've found the rolling time behind/in-front can be off during a segment, and vary wildly from the finish time displayed on device and Strava/Connect (it is the live rolling lead/follow time that is off).

NOTE4: If you ride with screen lock turned on...and you're not wanting to race segments but ride the loaded routes...you'll get annoyed real quick. You also cannot disable the segment popups en masse entirely while recording a ride.

free version. usually i map out my route on google, then use Strava for recording the route. if there are segments on my route, i don't know until the end. this method keeps my rides fresh and unpredictable (not knowing exact hill grades or inclines). besides, riding the same route over and over gets boring. this method of riding can get me into trouble when i train on my single speed. i've had to jump off the bike and run up a few STEEP hills.

DiabloScott 10-22-14 09:48 PM

Free only. I might consider premium if I had the equipment to include HR and power - otherwise segment times and totals are plenty.

Yeah premium also has your own personal heatmap also.

That's a nice little step, and hopefully a first step to getting where I'd like to see the two be. But, since we could already import Garmin activities into Strava via a computer, adding this wireless auto uploading to S from G really seems more like a desperation move to keep GC relevant than anything meaningful. I mean, users like me weren't even using GC anymore, and either plugging our G units into Strava, or worse for G, moving towards phones for data capture, which of course really cuts into G's action. In my mind, if G doesn't do something soon, their preeminent position as a cycling computer could be challenged by a next gen RFLKT or even Apple Watch.

If you can make up a 2-minute gap on any Strava segment I've seen, you're destined for greatness.

Or you're riding a motorcycle... ;)

Depends on the length of the segment. I just took KOM on a segment near where I live by over 3 minutes. It's a 13.6km loop. I was hauling a** by my own standards, but I doubt I'm destined for anything resembling greatness. The former KOM did give me kudos for it, however. That's all I'm getting, I'm afraid. :D

How do you make contact with Strava? I'm still new to it.

I can verify all of this. I do the same thing and use it daily. I've racked up a few Strava KOM's in my little back woods area since getting my Edge 1000.

Nachoman 10-23-14 01:33 PM

Free. But I only minimally use it. Plus, i'm already getting nickled and dimed to death.

Look at the segment and club leaderboards. When you see someone riding in your area, at your pace, or who you rode with without meeting, leave a comment on their ride. Start following other riders whose rides overlap with yours. Clubs also have discussion boards.

Oh, cyberstalking. That's not creepy at all...

Just kidding, thanks for the tip :)

I am a new user and really don't try for KOMs, at least yet. But around here we have some long "hill" climbs that are segments where that amount of time would be possible.

premium member here that finds the personal heatmap feature especially useful when considering where to ride.
i find that it gets me out of my usual rut/routes by stringing together streets i haven't ridden down. occasionally come
across interesting stuff/places/neighborhoods i never knew existed.

on a semi-related side note...finally figured out how to upload rides to strava via my garmin 510 with my old iphone4.
won't upload to the strava phone app but if the garmin and the iphone are synced, it will upload to the strava.com website.
then it will appear on the strava phone app. weird but then again, i'm not the most tech-savvy. glad i don't hafta spring for a
new phone since this one still does all i need or want it to.

Route 66 10-25-14 06:03 PM

Can any of you tell me how to change the settings in my iPhone so that the screen doesn't turn off and go black a few minutes into my ride? I'd like to be able to look down and see my current speed throughout my entire ride.

Thanks,
Steve

Back in the iPhone 4 days, it was under Settings > General > Auto Lock > Never.

Might only be good for a couple of hours. Especially if kept bright enough to read on a sunny day. Unless you have an external battery pack.
