Is a 48cm good size for some one that's 5'6 (168cm) tall?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: Specialized Langster and Cannondale CAAD10

I'm 5'10" and ride a 52 cannondale with a long stem with a lot of success. Try and get on the smallest frame you can and use a longer stem as to weight the front end this will make the bike handle better.

Why is it that people with outright bad fits or extreme outliers feel compelled to give fit advice? 5'10" on a 52 is either the former or latter.

The thing is just stating a "frame size" means nothing. That 52 could have a 55cm top tube, which would put him in the range.

A lot of these threads asking for sizing advice aren't very productive because every manufacturer sizes their bikes differently.

5' 4 1/2" . I ride a Synapse 51 with the seat all of the way forward. I probably could have gone smaller. I think I have shorter limbs and a longer torso. I love my Synapse!

Wish I can try a 48cm cannondale since that's the bike I most likely will be purchasing. I can't get a refund if its the wrong size. So I'm curious to know. I know it depends more on just your height, since everyone has different size arms, legs, torso, etcs. A lot can matter in how it all fits. But I'm pretty sure that for a cannondale road bike that I will either fit a 48cm or 50cm. However I'm leaning towards the 48cm.
So you say that you realise it depends on a lot more than just rider height (true) and then ask about a fit with your height being the only information!!!!

Come on. You sound like there's something wrong with a 160 stem

I've decided on going with the 48cm size. I test rode a 50cm today, they didn't have any 48cm for me to try. But I think I will do fine with that. Even the people at the shop said I would fit a 48 better. And it's a great and reputable shop.

Going with the 2015 SuperSix Evo model.

given that 5'6" is the only dimension given, 48cm is not a bad starting point for a road frame.

That's fine,. but there is something odd about yourself you are not telling us. Height is only one determinant. You must have extremely short torso and/or arms. Otherwise, the 48 must be too large.

Bikes: everywhere

Must be going for a standover-based fit.

Some folks are deathly afraid of top tubes anywhere near their nards while straddling the bike. Horizontal top tube of the Super 6 is enough to put the fear of God in ya!

No toe overlap for her!

No tire selection either, unfortunately.

what are your inseam and torso measurements?! i'm 5'7" with a short inseam and long torso and i'm on a 52cm 2015 Supersix EVO Ultegra. when i was getting the bike, everyone except my friend that fit me and ordered the bike (that i've know and has been my mechanic for about 9 years) said i should go with the 50cm because i'm short and that's what would fit. i ignored everyone and went with the 52cm and i personally love it. i highly doubt i could have gotten away with the 50cm cause my torso is too long, and the head tube and seat tube angles changes are major when you go that small...

the one negative thing about the EVO and CAAD as far as short people are concerned is that they have high standover hights, about 2.5cm higher than my 52cm Specialized, so no i don't have half of my seatpost showing but the bike rides like a dream and it fits me perfectly with a 100mm stem and 44cm bars. i could go with a 110mm stem and shorter reach bars if i wanted to, but i'll wait till next year to think about that. my suggestion, at least get on the 50cm and have the "great and reputable shop" change the stem and see how it feels. my 5'6" friend rides a 50cm EVO Black Inc. and my 5'4" friend rides a 48cm System Six and Super Six Evo. the 48cm just sounds too small for someone that tall, unless the standover is too high for you, which shouldn't even matter cause your not going to stand over the bike you're going to ride the bike...

Female, 5'7", wear pants with 30" length. My Synapse is 51 and has a good amount of seat post showing; stock stem. The bike feels comfy. I test rode a bike that was too small for me and my head was far out over the front wheel and I did not like the feel. When I ride on the hoods, and look down, I am looking down the fork and the front hub is not visible. Perhaps the OP has short legs; if the bike is really too small, then there should not be enough seat post to provide an adequate leg extension. Also, I would thing a 48cm frame with 700cc wheels would have even worse toe overlap. I would prefer not to have 650 wheels as this messes with the gear-inches and wheels and tires have very few choices.

I'm 5'6" and on my size 52 Cannondale CAAD9 there is toe overlap (US size 9.5 shoes, 43.5 European size). It's unavoidable for many smaller bike sizes depending on geometry and how big your feet are.

5'6" 29 cm inseam. 51 cm Jamis and still have toe overlap with size 7.5 shoe size.
I wouldnt dare go with smaller frame due to overlap.
