Using Bar Fly/K-Edge style Garmin mount with rubber shim.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Using Bar Fly/K-Edge style Garmin mount with rubber shim.

Sometime over the holidays I'll be picking up a new Garmin Edge bike computer, and I'd like to get one of those computer mounts that puts it in front of the handlebars. My only problem is that they're all made for the 31.8mm "please buy more stuff" handlebar size. I have the 26.0mm "worked great for decades" size, and nobody seems to make a mount for that size, so if I get one I'll have to shim it.

Has anyone here gone this route, and if so, how well does it work?

On RBR someone mentioned REI will have the 500 bundle at 200. I am not sure if it's true or if others will have a discount.

I am sure you can get some dense rubber wrap and make it work though. Or maybe just wrap that area in leather and crank the k-edge/bar fly down.

I'm going that route (on my second bike), haven't tried it yet.

It works fine. You might need two thin shims layered, as I did.

Cool, thanks for the replies.

I have a list of sites I'm keeping an eye on during "cyber Monday". I'll add REI to that, since we have a physical shop near here. The only problem is that since there's a physical shop, I'll get dinged for sales tax.

I'll probably go with a 510, and non-bundled, since I'm pretty sure my 305 stuff will work with the 510. I do need the HR strap though. Mine had the biscuit a couple years back.

The garmin out front mount comes with a shim for 26.0 bars. So everyone that bought the 510 bundle has one sitting in their box. I bought an extra mount for my commuter which has 26mm bars. So I still have one shim sitting in the drawer.

So unless you are specifically drawn to the k-edge or the bar fly, the actual garmin mount comes as you need it.

Thanks for that. I didn't realize it came with that mount. Problem solved.

My Garmin Edge came with a plastic mount that puts it in front of the stem which included a rubber shim that lets it work on 26mm bars. I bought a k-edge mount and used that shim with it and it works just fine. Not sure if they still include a shim in the box, but you might check and if so that should solve your problem. Otherwise, a piece of tire tubing and some black electrical tape should do the trick.

Oops- classic example of why you should read the rest of the responses. I see someone beat me to it. Sorry. I'm tired.

I use the k-edge shimmed with my Garmin 500, just took a CF headset spacer and cut it in half, done. Same method for my gopro camera. Works fine.

Many mounts come with alloy spacers to size down to 26.0.

Because I'm lazy, I shimmed my k-edge mount with a couple layers of extra handlebar tape (it was the closest thing at hand--I would have had to walk all the way down to the basement to find some rubber shims left over from random stuff)--it's worked fine for several months now.

I still have the original k-edge mounts without the plastic inserts. I haven't noticed any damage so far to my Garmin but I've read that the metal on plastic can damage or even cause the tabs on the device to break off. I really don't want to replace them since their not exactly cheap, but then again, neither is the Garmin.
