Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

@%#$&!!! Local Bike Shop

Okay, I can't believe how pissed off I am.

One month ago, I saw a Surly Karate Monkey I liked. I put money down on it, and have made payments since.

Well, tomorrow is my ONLY day off so I just called to finalize the payment so I can ride it tomorrow.

So I call, and the guy says "Yeah, I need to speak with you. They robbed a freewheel off your bike to put on another bike they sold". He says they'll have a new one on monday.

Okay, I go to school full-time and I work full-time. I have zero free time. Tomorrow is my ONLY day off (wednesday I am off work but school ALL DAY).

I am so pissed off at these guys. They are the big shop in town, I usually go to a smaller shop that I am happy with.

You got screwed.

Have you talked to the LBS owner about it yet? If not, when?

WTF??!! TELL them to put on another wheel and you'll pick up the bike tomorrow! If you've been consistent w/ your payments, they should do that.

OK, but the thing is they took a wheel off your bike and put it on another one, so why can't they do the same thing for you? I know "2 wrongs don't make a right", but screw that!

I dunno, this just ****ing pisses me off. I don't wanna know about this ****.

They should've played it cool with me and then said "Ohh ****, that guy is coming in tomorrow to pickup the Surly. Let's find a freewheel to use".

This opens up a whole new can of worms as far as I'm concerned, I wish I would've spec'ed everything right there and wrote down all the components.

Wow, what a moron. Sorry dude, that sucks.
If they're stealing a FW in the first place that likely means they have no other options to attempt to make good with for you, but I'd be demanding to speak to the owner and find out what he is going to do to ensure that he has a satisfied customer in you when this is resolved. Get creative with gearing ratios, loan you one for the weekend, whatever it takes. Man, I can't believe they would do that. No wonder people hate LBS.

So the Surly Karate Monkey is a built-up frame (no standard specs)? I'd take a look at the rearwheel ASAP, so they don't switch that one out too and replace it w/ a cheaper matching set.

I still say they should give you a front wheel -- even if it's a cheap one that you can use and then return once they get a front wheel that matches the quality of the rear.

Yeah, I am really tempted to go in tomorrow and point at a bike and say "I want that bike, but the wheels off that (the one that is already sold to me) bike"

If they say okay, well ****it --they're gonna reap the ****in whirlwind!!!

what I find funny was the salesman was dumb wnough to admit the whole truth...

Would have I preferred that he lied? No.

Does the truth somehow make things any better? Definitely not.

That seems like an incredibly boneheaded customer service move. They are obviously so big they feel confident that they can abuse your trust on such a whim. Kinda makes you wonder what else they're capable of. If they don't mind losing a customer, maybe they don't need your money, either. Ask for all of your money back and go somewhere else. ****** 'em.

Do you have a gun in the house?

Okay, now make sure it's safely locked away in the gun cabinet.

Go in a talk to the manager. Be friendly, but firm. Tell him/her that you're not happy and that you would like something to be done. See what they can do.

This isn't a bad idea... if they so freely stole your components, then you can freely ask for your money back and go to your smaller lbs with a full payment instead of installments. Not a bad idea... maybe you can even get it done on your day off

okay, I need some creative advice on how to make this right. Yes, I want this bike, but --I don't wanna get played like a fool.

I am gonna look at the brake pads tomorrow, make sure they haven't been joyriding. It's a sweet bike and would be fun to ride around their area (very cool area, nice shops and places to eat, record shops etc -very eclectic area of town).

So I need some suggestions, on how they can rectify this ****.

Get them to take a freewheel off another bike. If not, get them to give you a bike to use until they fix the other.

If not, get your money back, get another bike somewhere else, and go back to the first store and ride the bike around in their parking lot all day

If they don't have a freewheel in stock, go buy one at another shop and have them take that amount off the price of your bike. However, I find it kind of odd that they wouldn't have a cassette in stock. Every LBS around here stocks at least one or two LX or XT level cassettes.
