Lance's secret weapon
For all the Lance nuts, I thought you all might like this link. While looking at differant sights for best prices on the LeMond Croix de Fer, I found this. Lance has a new secret weapon. Not sure if anyone posted it on here or not.

I wonder if Discovery is just trying to save money on lance's equipment, you know all the publicity but they don't have to pay for the extra 20/30 mm of metal. Or maybe that was Nike's doing ...

OK, maybe we're done with the Lance jokes! On the more serious side, shorter cranks would let him spin faster by requiring his feet to move in smaller circles (circumfrential path is smaller.) Since Lance has a rep as a spinner, maybe the shorties will better match his style? He might still need normal cranks on his climbing bike, though.

You make a good point. You trade bigger gears for more revs. Theoretically you should be able to generate the same power with a shorter length despite using small gears if revs rise enough to compensate.
It's a very comlicated issue, but I almost wonder if going too short hurts you as much as going to long. Maybe some of the "side effects" of these different length cranks are more related to have either a hip angle that is either too open (short cranks) or too closed (long cranks).
Most likely there is an optimum relationship that generates the most power (gears and revs non-withstanding). The real question is where is that point.
Tests have been done on cranklength in the past unfortunately they made no changes to the seat position in either height or fore/aft. In the particular test I'm thinking of a 110mm crank made the most power. But the real problem is you wouldn't use the same seat height with a 110mm crank as you would a 180mm.

I got it. On the other hand, I didn't get the "singular" joke until I realized other people were amused. I thought the poster was just being a grammar d*ck.

The reason I said that is becasue I heard people advocate 165mm cranks on the basis you can spin them faster, etc.
