I've been using Bluetooth earbuds that I use in the gym, the Jaybird Bluebuds X. They could kinda work on the road, but I saw a review of the new wireless Beats that claimed they let in more outside sound on purpose. I know that in general, earbuds and riding aren't the best idea but music through the phone speaker isn't working well. However, having music really helps me ride harder.

So, if you wear earbuds of some sort while riding, especially Bluetooth ones, let me know which ones.

Not bluetooth, but Klipsch X11s are going to be the best ear buds for 95% of music players. For Smartphones, Klipsch work perfect, light (20g?) and tangle free cord. Stay in ear until you hit 45 mph.

Wear a regular bluetooth in 1 ear, then you can hear outside noises with the other ear.

OP, I've gone through searches like you did and tried a lot of different ones over the last a few years. What I wanted is a earbud to listen to podcast or internet radio while I am riding when the situation allows. The Yurbuds are what I settled on. There are several different models designed for sports and they all work pretty well. The one I currently use is the Signature ITX-2000. Here are a few things I like about them:
- Very comfortable to wear
- Don't fall out of your ear even when you move your head a lot
- Long and flexible cord
- Not noise-canceling or blocking, so you can hear your ambient sounds
- Wired so its louder than wireless

Before that, I tried many different models. Here are some of my experiences:

Motorola Hint: great concept with only one ear and wireless. But the execution left a lot to be desired: short battery life (only about 2 hours), not loud enough, and uncomfortable fit (for my ear).
Jaybird Sprint: not loud enough, awkward cord around the head, not very secured fit (for my ear again), and too much noise-blocking if you want to hear anything. Never tried the Bluebud X
Sennheiser/Adidas CX-680: pretty secure fit but uncomfortable, the control block in the middle of the cord makes cable management difficult when riding
Bose SoundSport: similar problem to the Sennheiser/Adidas in fit, better cord management
Sony BT100: this is the one if I were to go wireless, but the in-ear fit is not as secure as the Yurbuds
Apple ear buds: this is the ones that come with iPhone/iPods. They are completely useless, never stay in the ear

In CA they are now legal and they were not before. The argument was that hearing is not a requirement to drive and since bicycles follow the same rules of the road as cars - not required anymore.

Personally your advice is spot on - I'd never use them.

What x was trying to say is that ear buds are, or at least should be, illegal. They are, in fact, illegal in some jurisdictions.

I ride with BackBeat Go BT earbuds from Plantronics, but I only ride with one earbud in. The battery life is not the greatest, I can get a 4 hour ride out of them before they are done. I used to ride with an over the ear Plantronics Voyager Pro HD earpiece for a cell phone. That worked okay. No wires, one ear, etc but the battery life was great and sounds was okay (good enough for a bike ride)

I'm going to give in a buy an iPod mini and a single bud wired setup and just keep it all in my jersey pocket from now on. No extra earbud flopping around, not tied to my phone mounted to the stem. Just need to find an earpiece that will stay in.

I don't think "jakichan" wants people to suggest to him if he should wear headphones while riding, he wants suggestions on what to get for riding.

i rock a blutooth speaker vs earbuds and find it comfier as well as safer but to each their own.

I don't know where you heard this, but my 2014 CA vehicle code still shows that section 27400 is in place and hasn't been amended since 2004. Care to link me to anything supporting your claim?

I ride around 5:00 am and having music motivates me. However, I use one ear bud so that I can still hear cars and traffic behind me. It works wonderfully and I still have music. You may want to try it and see.

I was wondering about his too. And it looks like you're right. Section 27400 of the 2014 California Vehicle Code does prohibit dual ear buds.

I'm doing the same thing, but using an iPod Shuffle clipped to a helmet strap. Using a pair of Shure earbuds. VERY comfortable and it stays in place well.

I jokingly read rule #62 and tried riding without buds, just for the kick of it... I really enjoyed it and haven't ridden with music since..

But.. that being said I liked my generic iPhone buds better than the Jaybirds. I felt the Jaybirds canceled out too much of the noise and they were a hassle to deal with.
