i was following, with difficulty, a commuter the other day. he was making good time, sitting bolt upright, in street shoes and platform pedals and didn't look to be laboring at all. he had disc brakes in front. when departing from a stop he always dropped me with ease and it took me a couple hundred yard to catch him. at a light i caught up to him and realized the downtube was enormous. i was an electric bike. superior in many, if not all, respects to my road bike as far as ease of travel was concerned. stopping, starting, climbing.
i suppose if i were commuting and hated my commute, i would look into it, but seeing as how i ride for recreation and enjoyment, like most of us, i don't look for ways to avoid sources of amusement or pleasure in my choice of recreation.
i do embrace new technology if it adds enjoyment to the experience. and occasionally new stuff does enhance my enjoyment, if so, i buy it and use it and advocate it. but stop at proselytizing. i try to just state my reasons for using it, if asked, and leave it at that.
i often wonder if those that resort to name-calling, whether or one side or another do it because they can't find a convincing argument. it wouldn't surprise me, after all it's just a recreation for most of us. convincing someone that their preferences are wrong based on one's own preferences is a tough sell.

Sneeze on a rim brake and 80% of the stopping power disappears. They impose a lifetime upon wheels, they suck with carbon wheels, they unnecessarily limit wheel design. The only advantage the old-tech has is slight weight & aero, that is it.
Practically speaking, disc brakes, whether hydro or cable actuated, have superior stopping power over all conditions. The difference in control due to greater apparent modulation is exponentially ahead of rim brakes, and that alone is worthy of switching.
Maintenance is a non issue, you have to be a bonehead to not be able to adjust disc brakes properly. Noise is another easily addressed issue if it comes up...the goose honking...certain wankers mostly reference some nearly legendary issue with a decade old juicy brake that was notorious for the problem...in other words at this point anyone who makes the claim is an incompetent luddite.
So...there always will be luddites who gnash their teeth, whinge and ***** about disc brakes...
Lycra clad, poseur, fair weather, wannabees.

Since there's no consensus among top pros (read the article the OP cited or many other similar ones) on whether discs should be UCI legal and are beneficial for racing, you are labeling them with your description.

Pathetic.
