This is what I'm saying, with LiveTrack turned on, when your phone disconnects from the garmin, the last breadcrumb GPS co-ordinate that was sent to the map through your phone from the Garmin, would be where the LiveTrack map shows your position. My understanding of the feature is that all data (GPS/Speed/HR/etc.) is fed through your phone's connection, I don't believe it takes the GPS position from your phone. So when it stops transmitting, it should leave your location set to where your phone disconnected, while it doesn't pin-point the location, it gives you an area based on the bluetooth range between your phone and Garmin.

I've been told that when using LiveTrack, the only data that the Garmin feeds to the phone app is speed, cadence, HR and power via bluetooth. The phone's location API (GPS, tower triangulation, etc) handles the location reporting to Garmin's servers. This is done for power consumption reasons.

But even if LiveTrack is on, the event is not recorded on Garmin's site - it's only displayed on a temporary tracking page. This page expires as soon as the event is completed, so you can't go back and hunt around for where the data feed might have dropped out.

Edit: LiveTrack is not an alternate means by which you can record your ride; it is simply a feature whereby observers can monitor your progress in real time.

There is an option when you start the LiveTrack session, to extend how long the temporary page lives. If this is turned on, the page lives for I believe 24hours, so you can see it without it disappearing as soon as you hit stop. I make sure this is turned on, as my wife doesn't like being told that the session was over, as she doesn't know if I reached my destination, or if something else happened.

But even if the OP happened to have LiveTrack turned on, and just so happened to elect preservation of the page for it's max lifespan, it still wouldn't help him now – I think it's safe to say that it's been longer than 24 hours since he lost it.

Now I just really want to know how the heck he didn't immediately notice that his huge Garmin was suddenly missing from literally under his nose...

Velocity, Are you talking about the short cord? My Edge 1000 has this and i wrap it around my K Edge XL mount as added insurance incase it untwists.

OK sounds like the 1000 has a tether too. So was the OP utilizing this feature when the loss occurred?

A friend of mine had this happen to him. He retraced his route while looking at his cell phone. As soon as the phone connected with the Garmin he knew he was close. After looking in the area he found it. I'm not sure this will work if the unit is off. Good luck.
