They all ride differently!

I remember back when coffee was never anything other than somewhat bitter black stuff (full of God blessed caffeine)... and there was also Sanka. In those days coffee lovers were gourmand's. Now... today with endless varies of coffees and flavorings we also have coffee gourmet's.

Maybe in your pursuit of fine rides.... you've become the equivalent of a bicycle gourmet. May you be lucky enough to rediscover the gourmand... within.

This, and I thank him for it.

Back on topic, I went through the same thing in the last decade. I had an Eisentraut and a Serotta, both all Campy and both fit like a glove. Then, I came across a 2005 Roubaix Pro for a song and I bought it. OMG, I couldn't believe the ride difference in comfort. Since, it got replaced with a 2011 Roubaix Pro and I also own a Giant Propel. The steel stuff is gone and I don't miss it.

Looking at the setup, that frame is at least one size too small.

I suspect you are referring to the saddle setback and fairly long stem. In fact it is a 54cm c-c frame which by more modern measurement methods would be a 55+ cm frame. And I am only a little over 5'7". Most would say it is too large by two or even four cm. Also I am not terribly strangely proportioned. I guess I just like to stretch out on the bike.

Well you had the best of the best. It is hard to argue with conclusions drawn on those comparisons.

It's just the trend brought about by compact frames, it's even carried over to classic geometry. I'll never agree with it but I've leaned to accept that that's just the way it is now. Still makes the level top tube bikes look funny to me.

You are... undeniably correct. Steel bicycles are a fraction of the quality new bicycles being made. And the new high quality bicycles are awesome. I think (at least in my case) my attachment to steel is more nostalgic than ride quality. I love C&V... but my daily rider is modern.

spelling errors corrected.

That only applies to steal bikes, it does not apply to steel. The only thing that's a negative is you have to legally buy them.

Thankfully, my modern CF bike has not diminished my love one iota for my old aluminum Klein. A sweet bike will always be a sweet bike.

Tough love! Very authentic from the Abby/Ann Landers good old days.

You're killing me. I was just thinking about buying my first steel bike, now this!

sneakyflute 03-16-15 01:21 PM

Damn that's a sweet bike, rpenmanparker. Would you consider selling it?

Stucky 03-16-15 04:05 PM

Put some downtube shifters on that baby, RPP, and that bike would truly be unbeatable! (And it's my size, too!!! %$^%^%% c^%^%^ ^&%^%^%^!!!)

Cute! I guess some people think one misspelled word and the whole post is urined.

Well, it was one word misspelled twice. In any case, I am curious how steel bikes are the fraction of the quality of modern bikes. Assuming you meant any material other than steel. And that's "ruined", not "urined"

Ah, that's a better explanation of where "urined" came from, though I gotta admit I kinda like urined as a sub for the rather high-brow "urinated upon"!

Funny! As part of the repaint I had the brazed-on downtube shifter bosses taken of and replaced by the cable guides you see on there now.

Perhaps you should make me an offer for it. :)

Actually yes, but after a lot of investment in repaint and all new parts, I would be looking for a nearly-new-bike price. I can't afford to let it go as a used clunker any more.

O-K, but I'm Eye-talian, so it'll be an offer "you can't refuse"....
