(I'm now ducking, running for my life, and begging to be put in the FBI's Witness Protection Program...) Build is going good - got the headset pressed and the BB tube chased and faced and the MegaExo crank is on. Off to get the steerer tube cut and to get a longer stem and shop parts. I do hope to have it done before I go to sleep tonight. Here's the build: Santana Stylus Scandium Frame Chris King headset Ultegra 10 group - ders, shifters, brakes FSA Carbon Compact MegaExo crank Rolf Prima Vigors Tufo Elite Tubular clinchers Ritchey bars and stem Ultegra pedals Forte Pro SLX saddle Only thing I had to buy of all this was the frame and stem. 55/Rad |

hmmmmm........ That group seems familiar. Where have I seen that before? ;)
|
Hopefully we will see pictures soon.

Rad, great story and an even greater bike. It's hard to imagine that you got that beautiful frame in that gorgeous shade of blue, a $340 fork and a a $130 headset all for $475. You must have done something wonderful in your life to have such good karma. Can't wait to see the pictures when you complete the build.
|
yeah... i saw the frame yesterday -- i can't wait to see it built up. hurry hurry... maybe i'll get to see it tomorrow (hint hint)?

Well, I can't finish it tonight as I didn't get the steerer tube cut short enough. Don't want to use 28mm of spacers when 10 will be just fine - didn't measure the headtube correctly. All this sucks as I now can't ride tomorrow.
On the other hand, I made the decision to use the Zero Gravity brakes, which were being saved for the Tete. My estimate for total weight when this is finished is sub 16 lbs. 55/Rad |

Any preliminary pictures? |
No pictures until done, which will be tomorrow afternoon, but I had it all pieced together at one point today and it looked mahvelous.
Also, I'm going to borrow the Look Keo pedals from the Tete. Oh well.... 55/Rad |
Rad...
You know, of course, that your Tete will now show up in the middle of your build and you'll be vexed with two frames, but not enough parts! ...now heading for HigherGround's foxhole... ;-) |

Sad isn't it? He's still "borrowing" parts from that TETE of questionable existence. Okay guys, you've been doing a great job, just continue to humor him....... He's probably in therapy....... Whatta ya' think, my jealousy showing through because Rad's going to be riding his Stylus before I get the first part put on mine********** |

The problem is, I only wanted a project to do while I continue to wait. I had enough old parts laying around to build a decent bike and only needed a frame. Now, the darn thing has me stripping one perfectly finished complete bike (Trek 5500) and robbing parts from another project I've been working on for over a year.
I've been second guessing my classic-meets-weight weenie approach for the Tete. I originally intended to build it as a climber but the frame isn't in the neighborhood of the Stylus in terms of lightness, so I chose to make the Santana the climber by robbing the Zero G brakes and the Look Keo pedals and finish the Tete with more traditional gear. Here's another dilemma. I'm staring at the American Classic 350 Sprints I bought for the Tete and wishing they had a Shimano hub. 55/Rad |
Rad, with problems like yours, I'b be a very happy guy!
|
Rad, why not just call AC, and get a Shimano freehub. I thought they were interchangable, and only like $80 or something. Then, just swap it out. Or, is that Rolfs? Not sure.
|
So how close are you done to finishing the bike?
|
I said in another thread and I will reiterate it here: the mods should make a "green with envy" smiley available. It would get used a lot.

Done. Here are the first, not very well lit photos.
Bike looks great and is definitely under 16 pounds on the bathroom scale. No problems with the build other than the Zero Gravity brakes, which took a little work to get adjusted right. Hope to ride it later today as the roads are drying and sun is beginning to come out. 55/Rad |
I like it. Tell us how you like the Scandium ride compared to steel and CF?
|
Congratulations - it looks great!
|
I will after next Sundays' metric.
I'm not liking the Rolf decals with the blue.....actually, I'd rather put the American Classic 350's on this bike and lose the 1/2 pound. They are silver and black as well. Problem is they're set up with Campy hubs, meaning I'd have to get them changed. Might be something to think about down the road. 55/Rad |

Absolutely beautiful . . .
|
I love it.. absoltely gorgeous bike. However, I do agree that the Rolf stickers clash with the bike. Can't you strip them?

Wonder if you can use a heat gun and roll the Rolf decals off the wheels. Plain black would be outstanding. Ride report.... ride report..... we want a ride report! Oh, and take that wheel magnet off, it detracts from the overall view. You don't need no stinkin' computer on that bike. |
You could strip the Rolf Decals, but hopefully get replacement decals should you sell the wheels.
