Foster Smith, a Wisconsin pet supply, has an attachment for riding with a dog. It connects to the seat post. It will keep you dog away from the wheels and I think easier to control.

Hearing loss really effects balance. I wear two hearing aids normally but cannot wear them while riding because of the air noise and heat build up.

I ride Michigan in the Summer and Alabama in the Winter on a Long Haul Trucker.
Mainly Shiawassee County in MI. Great rural roads.
