My girlfriend started mountain biking on a very similar bike (2014 Norco Forma 7.2) and those skinny tires don't do anyone any favours...

I think the 85/86 frame failure theory is probably the best one. I like the idea of modern components on a vintage bike, so I might upgrade my synapse components and throw them onto the touring bike....
