Nashbar has a bunch of cheap Diadora ones. I don't know if they're any good, but I would proudly sport some of these.

Yep, I have a pair of cleatless Diadoras. They're rather nice with a perforated all leather upper. I've never tried them, just found em at a yard sale for $3.

there is a shop near me that has a few NOS pairs. Mostly small sizes (38 or so) and kinda pricey ($130-200), but they are both leather and italian.

Meaning no disrepect but why would you want to use old cycling shoes with toe clips? I am more "retro-grouchy" than the next guy (rode that set-up for almost 2 decades but once I switched over to clipless pedals there was no turning back. I even use Time pedals on my 70's vintage fixie conversion. Gerry

Well if you're going to be buying some sort of shoe for cycling, why not just buy clipless.

funny that people will wear those shoes and think wearing a helmet will make them look like a dork.

With old cycling shoes, how difficult was it to disengage from the pedal?

They did... But they gave them "street cred", aka ruined them by making them normal street shoes. I WANT a pair of those soooo bad, been looking a long time. They pop up every once and a while but never in my size. ARGH.

They made some sweet white ones in the 80's too.

With the diadora ones you have to put your foot in and reach down and draw the strap tight. you CANT GET OUT unless you loosen the strap.

Thanks everyone. Bad knees which is why I am going to clips. Does anyone know if a special shoe is needed for these?

how does bad knees mean you need a certain type of pedal?
and no, it looks like you can wear any shoe that fits in there.

don't waste money buying cycling specific shoes for clips / straps. a pair of chucks will do the job at a fraction of the price.

I've heard clips and straps are actually worse for your knees when wearing cycling-specific shoes than clipless. This is supposedly because while you're offered side to side movement in clipless, you aren't with slotted cleats and clips.

Most people I know with bad knees, including my buddy
Tom who still does centuries at 64 and has the sweetest
chrome Paramount the world ever knew, switched to
clipless pedals because of the option of float adjustment,
which is basically non-existance with clips.

Chucks are way too flexy for longer distances. Yow. Around the neighborhood is all right.

i've never had a problem riding long distances in chucks (or any other non cycling specific gear).
i'd imagine most people don't really have problems with thier stuff until people online tell them they should have a problem.

Actually I can relate. I am recovering from a minor knee injury and for some reason, I can't ride clipless right now. Clips and straps are much more comfortable, whereas Clipless bothers my knee. I have no idea why. As for shoes, I used to ride with chucks in clips and straps but just got myself a pair of Asics (link at bottom). They are WAY better, they feel snugger in the clips, while being just as easy to pull out and have a lot more support so are much better for walking too. I tried some Adidas indoor soccer shoes which were pretty comfy but the Asics won by a mile for me. Plus I like the colour. (They do come in other colours)
