Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone ever Rain-X their sunglasses?

Seems like Oakley'snewest thing is the "Hydrophobic" coating, which "is a permanent lens coating that prevents water from leaving streaks and sheens" (from the Oakley website). Sounds a lot like the Rain-X I use on my car's windsheild - anyone ever use Rain-X on their sunglasses? How'd it work out?

I'd avoid that. Rain-X in the eyes...not a good thing.

you know, this sweat/water streaks on my glasses is driving me nuts lately. i was just trying to figure out how well Oakley's new technology works. how about some of you RADAR users chime in and let us know. are your lens staying more clear and clean now a days? later.

Bikes: I got a red bike, and I got an orange bike.

My Oakley Radars rock. I can go for a long time without cleaning them. However, the frame / Path lens fits my face perfectly; it only touches my face at the bridge, plus if it's a hot day I wear a Halo headband so I haven't had to deal with sweat dripping onto the lens. But definitely more hydrophobic and resistant to streaking than plain polycarbonate. I'm very happy with them, just depends on if you want to spend that kind of cash.

I use Rain-X but if I'm not going fast enough (or seeing enough wind) the water beads up. I end up spraying my glasses with water to sort of "rinse away the beads". I do this even when it's really cold, which gets me looks from those that don't wear glasses.

btw I wear regular glasses all the time, riding and not.

Not just the Radars... All Oakleys w/ hydrophobe-whatever are pretty awesome when it comes to repelling water.

There used to be a product for swim goggles similar to Rain-X that prevents them from fogging on the inside -- you may want to try a sporting goods store to see if they still sell it.

Oakley sells a kit to put the same coating as the Radar's have on any sunglasses. It isn't cheap, $30 at Competitive Cyclist. It contains enough to do four pairs of glasses. Apparently even the coating on the Radar's has to be redone every once in a while. I don't know if it works, I have not tried it.

It's supposed to bead up, that's what Rain-X does.

I use it anytime I'm going to do rides in the rain. Rather than smear water on your lenses, it beads up and rolls off. It's especially good when you're going fast - normally this would cause water to block your vision.

I also use it on ski goggles when the precip will be rain or close to it.

Bikes: Raptor Bicycles... Fully custom carbon bikes... just the way you want them!

I use rain-x on my sunglasses daily. I also dump between 8-16 bottles of water over my head and face per ride. The rain-X keeps the lenses from getting cloudy or spotty. When the glasses bead up, I just remove them with one hand and give them a couple hard shakes and that removes *ALL* the water, and they are as clear as they were at the start. It works awesome.
