Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How to determine my problem?

Hello, I've posted before about my bike making a 'thud or grinding noise' from the pedaling. it isnt the bottom bracket as some suggested. but maybe...here is what i experienced. i unchained from the crankset.. and no grinding or bumpy feeling when i hand pedal. but when the chain is on it starts to grind (its not a loud obnoxious noise though...a little subtle) , the chain sits nicely on the sprockets(cassette?) so i believe it is tuned for shifting. i wonder if its possible that the cassette has a problem? or derailleur? is it possible that something is bent if i have never crashed it or anything? do cassettes have some kind of bearing like the bottom brackets? when i pedal sometimes, a loud crack noise will happen, so i wonder if this is the chain too...if its not a cassette issue could this be a need to replace the freehub? (i saw this on bicycletutor.com)...

if there are any possibilities that can be suggested, i'd appreciate it so much. thanks in advance!

Could be the chain. Is it well oiled or have any frozen links?
I had a grinding noise coming from my BB area before, but after inspection I found that the chain was extremely dry. Once I put some bioshield on it worked and felt great.
Also make sure that the chain isn’t ribbing on the derailleur.

hi, thanks, i thought i might be the chain, i cleaned it with the 'white lightning' chain degreaser...then lubed w/ 'finish line' it seems all the links on chain rotate freely...

What about your pedals? Is the noise coming from them when you put a load on them?

i found this on the park tool site.

The pawls may begin to slip and the bearings may become rough. If cleaning and lubricating the freehub does not resolve issue of slipping, sticking or noise, replace the freehub unit with a new one.

sorry, but how do you define 'slip' in this case? like the crack noise ..slipping to catch on the ratcheting teeth? i feel this might be it..but not sure...maybe i am misinterpreting it...

(maybe this depends...?) anyhow, thank you for your quick replies
