Bike's going in for surgery....
Monday my current project is going under the torch for a makeover
It's going to get a few things added that it didn't come with originally. Braze ons will be added and things will be cleaned up. I also started drawing up "plans" for my front rack that I'm going to attempt to build.

I too would like to know he frame type. I am torn on the shifter brazeons the bike did not come with them and therefore would be more correct without them. however since it so hard to find decent clamp on shifters I would say it is a smart idea. too bad you can't chrome the area between the shifters to make it look like there is a clamp

I'm pretty sure it's an International that he swapped with Tom.
Really looking forward to how this pans out...Rob is a cool dude.

Jeff @ Spectrum will be the surgeon, I'll be the surgical resident
I still need more time observing before I pick up a torch. I've done plenty of plumbing but this is much more delicate.... The fade paint job while sort of cool, is definitely NOT me. Way too LOUD!!!! That paint was put on REALLY THICK, it took over 3 hours of stripping to get most of the paint off. I still have a lot of detail sanding to do but, it's ready for some work. Oh yeah, it's a 74 (I think) International that someone moved braze ons around on already so I'm not the one who started the alterations. I already have a "stock" 74 International and love the way it rides so I'm building a second one that is exactly how I want it.
Thanks Aaron. You are the beginning of this whole build....
I'd like to have the whole thing chrome but, when it was repainted, they sanded the chrome and pretty much ruined it. I had a line on a chromer in York Pa but, he never got back to me. Supposedly in the $250 range for a full chrome job. So, it will get a two tone paint job w/ contrasting lugs. Oh, I'm running barcons instead of D/T shifters

Something else that popped into my mind, pump peg ala Raleigh Sports or pump "nipple" or nothing? I found a picture of a Herse that has the pump mounted on the non drive side seat stay https://www.flickr.com/photos/ratrock...7622335870141/
Would a spoke holder be a waste of money or? How useful is it really? I figure while I have the bike in this state I might as well get all brazing finished up.

With even half the braze ons the frame has now, the chrome plater's polishing dept will hate you, also it is difficult to set the anodes well to get all the tight regions, the electrons want to take the easiest path is a way to describe it. Most chrome places today will look at you really askew if you suggest partially submerging the frame.
I would run a leather or rubber chain stay protector. Is this going 700c or 650b by chance?

Rob I'm a big fan of the pump on the seatstay. Especially if having it behind the seat tube limits your fender clearance (does it?)
Spoke holders are just cool...not terribly useful if you have well built wheels. If you're gonna do a spoke holder, make sure you do it right and do spaces for 3 spokes and consider doing it on the Drive side chainstay so it doubles as chainstay protection

I can't mount the pump behind the seat post, too tight w/ fenders. I'll talk to Jeff about making a spoke holder but I think it'll end up being too expensive. As far as chroming goes, I think I'm going to skip it and just paint it up nicely.

To properly re-plate the chrome is a very expensive task. It has to be stripped in the reverse of how it was plated, first in the chrome tank, then the nickel tank and usually stopping at the copper where it is polished again, copper plated and polished another time and then nickel and chromed.
I have heard horror stories of careless platers leaving frames in the stripping stage too long and the frames coming apart, although I believe they were silver brazed frames.

Chrome is going to be too much trouble. I'm thinking about going with Gulf Blau (1963 VW Bug) L390 with some contrasting colors https://www.wolfsburgwest.com/colors/63l390.htm I want a blue bike but don't want to paint it the "standard French blue" (although that is nice!).

There is still more work to be done. Rack braze ons for the fork and need to make fender mounting bosses for the rear fender. Kellog was leary about drilling into the brake bridge etc. I'm going back to finish things up. I'm still torn about putting a pump peg on the seat stay.
I took a really cool picture with my cell phone while Jeff was brazing the canti mounts on but I don't know how to get the picture from phone to here!

Coming along...need better pics though!
Email the cell phone pic to yourself and then post it from your desktop...
BTW...If you are gonna be by the barn again soon...could you...umm...check and see if TK sent my decals out. He is kind enough to send a pair gratis, so I don't want to call and bother him...but...we can't finish touching up my frame until I get them...TIA.

Yes, that's the International I traded with Rob. He had a 56cm (my size), and I had a 58cm (his size). I got it with that wacky paint job. I don't remember whom I got it from, but I'm pretty sure it was a BF-er.
Don't you just love steel? You can retrofit things 30 years later!
holiday, to answer for Rob, I know that he's quite handy at painting, and I'll bet he's going to paint it himself. So now you know someone who paints bikes! He primed my frame but didn't have time to paint it for me, since he's busy with work, school, and getting his house in shape. I know, the nerve! Right?

Yeah, me too. Mounting a pump has always been a compromise for me. This seems better than all the methods I've used. I still use those long pumps. I got teased for it recently. I get teased for a lot of my old cycling gear. I guess that's a matter for another thread.
