Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? This is the Classic and Vintage forum. Are you looking for the single speed/fixie forum?

Here are some features on Single Speed and Fixed Gear conversions. Sekine Single Speed Options. Build a Single Speed. Poor Boy Single Speed. And a bit about Converted Bicycles for a touch of inspiration.

Hope this helps.

Are you on good terms with your dad, and does he know you grabbed his bike? Father's day is coming up, you know.

No problem, you can click the Report Post button (exclamation point in a triangle at the lower left) and have the thread moved.

Moving to SS/FG.

Univegas are nice bikes. What kind of terrain will you be riding? Is the bike rideable now? Why do you want to convert?

That being said, I love my univega conversion. Track frames are cool but I love a long wheelbase for practical urban riding. Will post some pics later maybe.

Why turn a perfectly usable Univega into a "$weet fixie"? If you want a singlespeed, set it to third gear and forget about the derailleurs. Carleton has a great article on why you SHOULDN'T convert that bike to a fixed gear.

Why do so many people come here asking about conversions because they're going off to college?

It's on every list of Freshman Year school supplies along with a pair of Toms, the latest Arcade Fire album, tattoo on ankle, and copious amounts of cheap beer.

Hey man there's nothing wrong with cheap beer!

(conversions, Toms, the latest Arcade Fire album, and most tattoos on the other hand. . .)

I lol'd. I know this is a really obnoxious/hip thing to say, but does anyone else find it annoying how many people are into the Arcade Fire now that they've gained so much popularity from the whole Bieber thing? I listened to them back in middle school, and they haven't really gotten better. . .

Nothing wrong with the arcade fire, but yea, all of the sudden everyone seems to love them.

Sorry, I guess it wasn't Bieber (I never watch the Grammy's). It was The Arcade Fire vs. Eminem, Gaga, Katy Perry, and Lady Antebellum (whoever the hell she is) for album of the year. Including the Arcade Fire was just really weird and pretty much the entire world had the same canned reaction "lulz 'indie' beats crappy mainstream I'm so cool for having kindof sortof heard of the Arcade Fire once".

To some people, myself included, the whole thing seemed kind of staged. They knew it would get a ton of press. And anyway Funeral was infinitely better than The Suburbs.
