Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

To be fair to them, maybe because college campuses are often ideal for getting around by bike? And/or they'll no longer have access to mom and dad's car when they're away at college?

To some people, myself included, the whole thing seemed kind of staged. They knew it would get a ton of press. And anyway Funeral was infinitely better than The Suburbs.
Who the **** is Arcade Fire?

Bikes: '07 Pista, '09 Fantom Cross Uno, '8? Miyata, '67 Stingray, '0? Zoo mod trials, Tallbike, Chopper, '73 Schwinn Collegiate, '67 Triumph Chopper, '69 CB350, '58 BSA Spitfire, '73 CB450

If it is in good/ok/working shape, leave it at home and get a different bike. Having your old man's sweet old ride sitting outside every day to rot/getting it jacked would suck. From what I have read, they were in the $400+ range back in the 80's, not what I would want to use for a college beater.

Personally, I'd go with something from bikesdirect.

Why do so many people come here...
Because this is the ss/fg forum.

...asking about conversions...
Because it seems like a cheap and/or cool way to get a fixed gear bike.

...because they're going off to college?
See previous answer.
