Why is this silver tape so difficult to find!?

Hey everyone,

I'm helping restore my buddy's '82 Peugeot Centennial Edition (PH12) back to stock/period appropriate.

Currently, the bike has a Ambrosia "Bike Ribbon" silver, slick tape (see images below).

Does anyone know where I can find a direct replacement? The shiny, smooth silver tape is elusive and I can't seem to find that particular style of tape anywhere.

I've offered up a few suggestions but he's not quite into them:

Silver Benatto Celo Tape is similar, but lacks padding and doesn't quite look like the Ambrosia, although it is period appropriate.

The second option is to keep with "Bike Ribbon" and go with their updated material/style called "Carbon Tape", which I'm guessing looks something like silver carbon fiber when it is installed.

The third option is Cinelli "Treasure Silver" which has breathing holes, similar to what is already on the bike.

None of these three options is really doing it for him. He either wants a direct replacement or something a little closer.

I'm a touch frustrated by the hang up on such a small detail, but in the same regards, it's also a bit fun to really try and make something spot on identical to what rolled off the factory floor 27 years ago.

Any thoughts on the tape matter are greatly appreciated.

Because the Ambrosio Bike Ribbon (my favorite too) is obsolete. Some colors available on ebay sometimes.

Fizik Microtex silver might be a good option.

Because you need to search eBay for CHROME tape

https://cgi.ebay.com/CHROME-BIKE-HAND...#ht_2041wt_952
https://cgi.ebay.com/F-U-B-A-R-Gloss-...ht_1173wt_1185
https://cgi.ebay.com/F-U-B-A-R-Metall...item3a68b56404

Any of those work?

Nice suggestion on the Fizik tape, Due, but I'm guessing the huge amount of holes will turn him off, same with the Fubar Chrome, Khatfull. I know he wants some, but not that many.

These are possibilities, however. Thank you!

Keep the suggestions coming! Or sell me a couple of rolls of your highly coveted Ambrosia Silver

If he enjoys tedium, he could use this one and punch the right # of holes with a leather punch.

Thanks for the thoughts on the Tape. The FUBAR name isn't a brand I hear many reviews about so a positive thought helps ease my mind on the quality a bit.

Now that's not a bad idea! I've done all the leg work thus far for this tape, maybe it's time my buddy gets his hands dirty!

Well, if he is that picky, just use duct tape.

Fast forward nearly 5 months later from my original post.

The build on my pal's '82 Peugeot Centennial Edition (PH12) is roughly 98% done except for the last remaining details and fine tuning adjustments, however, I am still searching for the Ambrosio padded bar tape! Above, suggestions were made for improvised results but my buddy is dead set on bringing his PH12 back to bone stock, which I can appreciate. He has also opted to hold out for the silver Ambrosio, which I have been searching for nearly every day on eBay with no luck. The silver stuff must be really rare.

It's a good thing riding season (for him) is over, but before it comes around again, I would like to have this build finished so, does anyone have any they would be willing to part with or could point me in the direction of for purchase online?

I'd be ever so grateful.

At this point, I'd seriously consider a "buddy, come to Jesus" meeting.

That's a lot of looking......did this guy save your life once, or something?

Ha! He's a good friend but his neurosis is the same as mine where we get stuck on something and can possibly spend way too much time and/or money in order to make it "right". I'm ok with a near-daily search because I'm already on eBay looking for a number of other items. Tacking on one more isn't a problem and adds almost no time. The problem, however, is now becoming the space. My garage can only hold so many bikes and I'd like that hook back for another build.

Nice Deda's, Jay. I do think that's a very good alternative. It's one I'll present in the mentioned come-to-Jesus meeting I may need to have if no tape becomes available prior to the spring (when I really need that space in the garage back!).

Send the original tape out to be restored by a master artist. I bet that restoration guy on TV could handle it.
