CAAD10 rear dropout spacing ... weird?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CAAD10 rear dropout spacing ... weird?

2012 CAAD10. This is wrong/bad, correct? Am I misunderstanding something? Sent a quick email to my LBS, they want me to bring it in for them to have a look.

Has anyone seen such wide spacing on a modern alloy road frame?

(cross-posted from Cult of CAAD thread, hoping for some corroboration from other CAAD10 owners)

I double-checked with digital calipers, in case somehow my tape measure was wrong (hah). Nutty, right?

100% agree, I should have stated so. I'm bringing it to the shop tomorrow.

Of course, I've been riding it this way since I got it back in November. I didn't notice the odd spacing until I threw a different wheel on today.

Cannondale should give you a new frame, but you'll be fine riding this until the new frame comes in.

I just checked my 2012 CAAD10. It's exactly 130mm.

LBS is going to contact the dealer - sounds like they expect they'll want to exchange the frame. They told me that it's safe to ride in the meantime - assuming of course, I make sure the dropouts are sitting properly before I close the skewer (duh, now..). Hopefully the cannondale guys will see it the same way the shop guys do, and I'll have my parts moved over to a replacement frame before the first race of the season.

Really! what year? Did you buy as a frameset or a bike?

Are you not concerned by it?

140cm?? How do you even mount a wheel on that, and how could you not notice when you got the bike?

140mm not cm.

140cm is 4 feet 7 inches.

i thought tandems were 145 or 160 depending on the mfg.

i would have guessed that someone used a 145mm hub if it were bought secondhand.

Just measured my 2012 Caad10 and it is the standard 130mm. 140? That's just crazy.

How does your wheel fit in it? Does it spring out like crazy when you open the quick release?

The current "standard" for tandems is 145mm. Santana does 160mm.

New theory, they built the Op's bike using the rear end of a tandem!

not when I open the quick release, no. if I unscrew the skewer all the way to its end though, it'll pop the spring and end piece off pretty well, if I don't hold it.

Thanks, Ultraslide. Hoping the shop will get a quick reply from the dealer rep..

so...I'm not sure if this was a joke, or if you really meant you measured 140mm like mine.

It's quite possible. If it happened on your frame, it's actually more logical that a batch of them were bad than yours was totally by itself.

It makes me sad that these frames no longer have "Handmade in America" on them. How they could ship frame manufacturing to Tiawan and not lower the price of the bike by at least 20% is criminal.
