Bikes: 1940s Fothergill, 1959 Allegro Special, 1963? Claud Butler Olympic Sprint, Lambert 'Clubman', 1974 Fuji "the Ace", 1976 Holdsworth 650b conversion rando bike, 1983 Trek 720 tourer, 1984 Counterpoint Opus II, 1993 Basso Gap, 2010 Downtube 8h, and...

Sounds like 50's or 60's. But photos would help a lot. The more, the better. Best if you put some photos on Flickr or another photo hosting service and post them here by copying the links and using the "insert image" button (third from the right).

Probably 50's or 60's in the absence of a photo. Highly likely to be a Raleigh Industries mass produced 'clone' of a range of 'sports' bikes that included Raleigh, Carlton, BSA and Sun brands. All virtually identical.

Yes, if the bike is from after 1960 (which is likely) than that is almost certainly true. But in the early 50's BSA made some very nice bikes with 531 frames and high end components. The Tour of Britain was one of these. There is a nice photo of one on Flickr; maybe this link will take you there:

How many of these would have made it to the US though? There weren't all that many in the UK from what I can recall. Assuming that rebelpeter is in the US of course!

We need photos!

Just so.

I'm betting rebelpeter is on your side of the pond! But in the post-war years, when the UK was trying to export its economy out of war debt, a lot of fine bicycles came over here.

I can do that. I've sent you a private message. You can't send private messages until you have posted 50 times, but I think you can receive them.
