Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is road cycling fun?

I saw this, and thought I should bring it to your attention.

Road cycling is less fun than paddleboard yoga and marginally more fun than snow shoveling??? And way less fun than watching sunsets or instagramming? Wow, my priorities are all out of wack. Anyone want to buy some bikes - I have 4. Going to Lululemon to buy some stretchy pants and hit the paddleboard.

"Sack factor". For those well endowed, risk itself is a large part of the fun. For those less fortunate, it dampens fun.

That plot appears highly scientific.

Bikes: they change so much I'm tired of updating this

in central indiana you really have to love riding your bike, because it can be boring cruising the corn field lined roads. and sometimes it isnt fun, but i still love it.

I think it's based on the fact that the rare times you see a road cyclist smile, it's always a Fred. Shrug.

There's a paddle board yoga class that does its thing just behind my apartment. I'm always waiting for the sea monsters to attack them. I have some emergency popcorn on hand, and a camera.

I don't think just riding my bike is "fun". I have fun riding in groups. I have fun riding in events. The activities around cycling are fun, but just being alone on a country road isn't necessarily "fun". That doesn't mean it's not rewarding though. I don't have fun sitting next to the ocean watching a sunset, but I find it fulfilling. I'd say cycling can be like that as well. It's about being at peace and turning off the world for that moment... but it's not "fun"

tired, hungry, far from home and headwind, not fun. singlespeed, 3 cups of coffee, cheese danish, stiff bike shoes , slayer on your ipod, bombing downhill thru a cemetary? very fun! the only other activities ive ever done with competency which were more fun, pool skating and snowboarding in knee deep powder. which may actually be the most fun! but yes, cycling kind of bridges the gap between aerobic drudgery and velocity based fun. cycling downhill is extremely fun. cycling uphill when you arent really feeling can be the pitts. still beats running though. that #$%^ sucks.

Mountaineering is the most dangerous and least fun activity. Apparently they are doing it wrong.

Well, I for one would rather be road cycling than anything else on that list.

If I don't get the associated Gartner Group whitepaper to go with this, I don't have any faith in this magic quadrant.

I've was surprised when I read someone post that they prefered a road bike to a touring bike since touring bikes are known for a more upright, comfortable posture. I prefer an upright ride and larger tires than you usually have on a road bike. I still remember riding downtube shifting "10 speed bikes" of the 1970's. I found it was really rough and weird-riding around my parents cottage.

That being said, certain hybrid or mountain bikes are fun to me in the sense you feel like a 10 year old kid. I saw some children riding bicycles once saying "It's the only way to fly" and I think I knew exactly how they felt.

And sea kayaking is a really safe activity that is less fun than car camping, skimboarding, and bodysurfing. There's no way they're doing it right.

Snowshoveling is unsafe. I know two people who died shoveling snow.

Bike riding is enjoyable but I'm not sure I'd call it 'fun'. Playing ice hockey is fun, but cycling, particularly racing, involves a lot of time spent suffering. Sprinting is fun, moreso if you win, but mostly road cycling is just pleasant and enjoyable. I agree that mountain biking can be fun if you find a nice flowy track to ride, but I still prefer the satisfaction I get at the end of a ride on the road.

I spend many hours reading as well which I also consider enjoyable and not 'fun'.

i am annointing myself master of fun. i theorize the cycling hierarchy of fun as follows most fun to least fun.

bmx vert riding
bmx dirt jumping
mountain bike park
mountain bike downhill
downhill road cycling
city singlespeed riding
road riding
touring

all of which are infinitely more fun the stand up paddle boarding, running, going to the gym or any of that crossfit mumbo jumbo.
