Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BMC pro machine or New Trek Madone 5.5 2008

HI all

I'm stuck between these two frame for my new bike, the BMC pro machine and the new 2008 Trek madone 5.5.

I like the BMC for it build quality, swiss origins, high tech carbon and awesome looks, and I like the new Trek because it cutting edge design, a first in road bikes.

I'm quite tall 1.87cm and I weigh around 77kg, not sure if that make a difference in the choice. The main thing that is putting me off the Trek its paint job, its terrible but then I suppose in the big scheme of things that is just superficial.

I would like your adice on the choice, I basically want the better bike and the bike that would offer a better ride. I ride fairly hard and race quite often.

You advice would really be appreciated.

I am sure you will get loads of responses saying "ride them both and pick the one you prefer", which doesn't really answer your question but is good advice in my experience. Can you go for a custom paint job on the Madone if you dislike the stock paint that much?

Either way sounds like you are going to have a pretty sweet bike at the end of the day.

Bikes: 08 Felt F4, 05 Fuji Team SL, 08 Planet X Stealth, 10 Kona Jake the Snake, 03 Giant OCR flat bar.

I've never ridden either of them, but just to be different, I would get the BMC in Astana colors.

I love those bikes.

But in reality, if you can ride each one, you should find that one just "feels" better than the other. That should be the one you choose.

I am for the BMC, but only because lots of people have Trek. In fact, I was just looking at getting a BMC.

thats another reason for considering the BMC over the Trek, everyone is going to have a trek by next year.

BMC is almost a boutique bike like the lapierre, but the question still remains, which is the better bike?

True; but let's be honest with ourselves...for the majority of us, "how the bike looks" is a large factor in the decision-making.

I'll admit that when it came down to deciding between two bikes, I chose based on how much "cooler" I thought one looked over the other (taking comfort in knowing that both bikes where very high quality rides).

In simple (albeit very subjective) terms of design/style, the BMC wins.

You're just buying frame/fork?
So in theory the components you use to build will be the same between the two...coming down to frame alone, not sure if one really stands out way beyond the other. You're going to have a very high quality frame in either case.

What sort of warranty would each come with?

The BMC design is suppose to make it stiffer.

Phonak's entire team road the BMC Pro Machine in 2006 if that tells you anything.

Bikes: BMC SL01, XtC, Rhythm GX and a frankenstein avalanche 2.0

Trek for racing, BMC for everything else. The only BMC frame truly suited to racing is the SL01 and maybe the SLT01, but the SLC01 starts losing too much stiffness. but then again I'm a sprinter. If the geometry was right, I'd go the SLC01.

And Phonak was paid to ride those bikes.

Don't forget the BB is 90mm wide for the Madone. And the seat tube is different. All these type of things might add to cost.

Between the two, I'd pick a BMC just because.

And Disco was required to ride Trek. Regardless - the BMC is a Pro Tour proven frame.

BMC's run odd sizes (...55, 57, 59 etc); they run large, so I would size down (ie, go with a 57) and stretching your position (if need be) with a longer stem.

Regardless of where you plan to buy, I suggest going to Competitive Cyclist and use their Fit Calculator to determine what size of frame you need for the BMC.

I didn't even pay attention to that. I don't think they make bikes that small. Might have to get a custom build.
