Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Google Map Distance Calculator

Check out this little tool for estimating distance of a route using Google Maps: https://www.sueandpaul.com/gmapPedometer/

I traced out our most frequent route and it came up within 400 ft.

Based on my cyclometer, it is pretty damn close.

Thanks!

This is sweet!!! I haven't purchased a bike puter yet, so I've been guessing all this time. No I can give a good estimate of my travels.

This works rather nicely. I just traced my quick 9 mile workout loop, and it came out pretty close to what my cycling computer registers. This could be useful to help plan club, or group rides. Cue sheets are always easiers to follow, when they include mileage reference points for turns in case someone gets seperated from a group.

The only problem I can see is that it might not track the distance changes in all the elevation dips in roads? Can anyone shed any light on this?

Even on really hilly roads, that is only very slight.

I just traced my route out from this morning. The google thing said it was 20.2 miles and my bike computer said 22.03. I'd say it's a good estimator, especially since it only does straight lines. I'll try it again against my next route and try to only take straight roads...

If the road turns, you can put in a new waypoint in the middle of the turn, if its a really round road, just put in a butt load of points, it will be virtually the same. You don't have to put points at intersections only...

On a 10% grade (5.7 degrees), the added distance traveled is only about .5% or 26 feet for every mile traveled. I doubt most peoples cycling computers are that accurate

Actually I forgot about a little detour I took. The google thing came out to around 21.5 miles or so versus the 22 miles on my bike computer, and I was kinda guessing where I turned around so it may be even closer.

This is the ****. I've been using PDF maps downloaded from city and county web sites, stitched together in Illustrator, and then draw out paths and use a CAD tool to calculate the lengths of my lines against the scale. This will make it easy-peasy. Thanks Sue And Paul!

Bikes: more, please.

Sue and Paul's Pedometer is my new favorite toy: just mapped out 2 of my favorite 20-mile routes:

Orange County >start & end @ Weaver Street Market, Carrboro (22.65 mi) = https://tinyurl.com/dlzo6

Durham County >start & end @ Whole Foods Market, Durham (21.10 mi) = https://tinyurl.com/dyync
