use the search.
if you did, you'd already know that:
- Windsor used to make quality bikes in Mexico.
- now the windsor name belongs to bikesdirect/cycle spectrum and is just slapped on random taiwanese/chinese bikes
- the windsor hour is basically a fuji track.
- it has a decent frame and less than stellar components - maybe a decent platform for upgrades.
- the hour is available for less on ebay (though still sold by bikesdirect/sprtymama)
- i'd rather ride the mercier.

Bikes: Lots. Mostly steel. Mostly heavy. Mostly geared, and very low, at that.

If Bianchi, Fuji, and IRO have "entry level" bikes in the 500-range.. what would this be considered? I don't want to think about it.

I say save up one more paycheck and get something nicer.

It would be considered as a paperweight or a door prop.

So I actually just bought that bike about a month ago. I ride around Philly for fun and commuting, but I never ride on a track and I have no experience with that. Having said that, I think the bike is fine. At this point, because I don’t own a really nice bike, I can say it is good for me. The frame is nice, but some of the parts are ****ty. The tires are low quality, along with the pedals/clips. Not sure about the crank and cog, but I’m assuming they’re not that nice because the entire bike was only 360. The handlebars are very wide, but again that’s in comparison to my roommate’s cinellis. Overall the bike is pretty nice, and I think worth the money.

So to what baxtefer said, my one roommate has the Fuji track and the frames and parts are very similar. The hour seems to ride a little better but then again it could be biased. My other roommate has the IRO mike v pro, and while it’s definitely a much better bike all around, I don’t really need a better bike than the hour, I just want one.

So anyway, recap – it’s a good bike for nothing too serious. You won’t kill your bank account and it’s always nice to get a new bike. One last thing, I think that "sale" is fake. I'm assuming it's not real because I found a random thread about the same bike from a long time ago where the same sale was going on.

So that was my first post, hope it wasn’t overkill. Anytime I’m looking at bikes on online stores I always wish there were more pictures. So I took some for you.

The bottom bracket or left crank arm is tapered so the crank doesn’t fit in all the way. It bothered me at first but reading into it I think it’s normal.

Pretty crummy tires… no skids or you’ll blow right through them

Good luck with the decision.

Five or six times each month, a "newbie" posts in the "Bike Forums" with a link to a bike being sold through Bikes Direct or one of the five or six E-Bay stores that are associated with Bikes Direct.

Each of the "newbies" asks a friendly question about "how good" is the bike and usually mentions the "very good" price. A rather lengthy discussion of the bike follows. The "newbie" usually then disappears and never posts on any topic unrelated to Bikes Direct or its products.

Bikes Direct buys little paid advertising. A small ad in the back of "Bicycling" is about their only paid advertising. When you "google" around the web for information about their various bikes, what comes up? All of the threads on "Bike Forums" that start out with links to their selling sites and mention of the "great price".

Perhaps the moderators of "Bike Forums" think these threads have NO connection with Bikes Direct. Even though they are usually about identical. Same length. Same wording. Same helpful link to one of their products. But, I think most of these Bikes Direct "promotional" threads smell funky. Smells like a bike dealer trying to use "Bike Forums" for some free advertising.

BikesDirect ALWAYS has a sale going on. At its own web site. At the numerous E-Bay stores it operates under various names. And, you can always find a "link" to one of those sales in a recent thread begun by a helpful "newbie" on "Bike Forums". What a coincidence...

Your thoughts intrigue me, alanbikehouston, and I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter...

From the sounds of it, even if Bikes Direct is using plants, they're pretty small-time with their tactics.

Whatever,
I mean its a track bike, but you could buy something cooler (Fuji, used, KHS) or find a decent road frame and build it up right. But find a good store, (read: not your buddy who worked at a store) and get a formula rear wheel. Oh yeah, use a brake.

So many options, often for style...

The life of fashion is fraught with so many perils.

Cog, chain, chainring, hub are important. But use a front brake and pay a good mechanic (to at least look it over).

The mercier is better, Check out IRO, look for used stuff. More fixie kids means pistas are gonna be showing up used. Also Langsters are better than pistas and are even more common. They just don't look like 1970 Schwinn Paramounts.

Don't know why they keep posting in the FG/SS board if what alanbikehouston says is true -- they keep getting ripped apart.
