Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

It took me a moment to figure it out when I saw it.

Wheeled the bike around, stopped, looked at it and then said, "Oh!" and laughed. Couldn't decide if it was great or stupid. I decided that it was sarcastic, obnoxious and subtle enough to be genius.

Here is another view...

Mr. Frank Grady Pickens, 86.

Saw him slowly pushing his bike up a hill heading into town to get a bite to eat. Asked if he preferred me to push it for him he responded, "Better not. It gives me something to lean on so I can keep steady."

Neat guy. We walked and chatted a bit. Note the harmonica in his right hand. He called it a harp and played it for me. Good too.

39° today.

Southern cyclists stay indoors and Swift when it gets this cold so I had the Silver Comet Trail all to myself.

Happy All Hallows Eve!

It's in the *process* of descending.

Actually, I don't mind riding in the cold at all (my weak ass fingers and toes notwithstanding), but scrolling through recent pics got me fretting about the several months of limited sunshine that lie ahead. The (extra) stupid thing is that things aren't even that bad yet--I got back from a super pleasant ride, only for my potato pics to convince me that the day had in fact been quite dreary.

it isn't...i actually got this at whole foods 6 years ago. it's hard to find a cycling cap that fits my massive head, and this one almost does the trick! there's no branding on the hat or even on the inside tag.

Well it's stylin' and it looks warm and comfy too. Herringbone or a tweed?
