Other than wintertime trips to the corner store on the MTB, back in the '70s I used to ride to swim practice at 5:30am(!) on snow-covered Cleveland streets on a Sears 3-speed. I'd get the knobbiest 26x1-3/8 tires I could find back then. I don't recall ever wiping out, but stopping with wet rims was a challenge!
