5 bicyclists dead outside Kalamazoo

Is this worse than the 7 other people walking and bicycling who were killed individually by people driving cars yesterday? Why no outrage for them? Or the other 5,342 who will be killed this year?

Your point? Yes, all are sad events. Many times a single rider is not "seen" by a driver but a group of riders?

The guy was seen driving erratically and multiple people called the police prior to the incident. This is an example of why I'm not shy about calling the police for erratic driving, texting, etc.
I called 911 Saturday night when two teen girls out joy riding blew through a yield sign right in front of me as I was driving home. I turned around and got their tag number.
Just this morning a truck was flipped over on one of the main roads in my area.
People think this is a ****ing joke.

Yeah, I read that this morning, I hate when new agencies are so quick to print anything they screw up such simple facts. MLive says they were in an organized group, although that could really mean anything.

Many years ago in this area, a driver plowed into a group of cyclist. He had a medical condition which effected his eyesight. He should have never been driving. When it went to trial part of the defense was to cast the group as scofflaw cyclist. It worked and he got off.

Running into 10 people with a 4,000lb moving vehicle and killing half of them... Not an "accident".

A long time ago in my early days on BF I mentioned an incident with a pickup truck. A couple of posters wasted no time in taking me to task for "profiling" pickup drivers. I didn't mean to do that and walked back my comments, but after many years here, its clear that there is something majorly wrong with pickup drivers as a group. I don't want to hear anyone defend them anymore. I'm fed up with the culture of lawlessness and indifference to social norms that pervades that sector of humanity. That driver should never again see daylight. Others who don't commit mass murder, but commit grievous bodily injury to innocent cyclists and peds should be made to kneel as their licenses are set on fire and burned to ashes before their eyes.
On the subject at hand, condolences to the families. I hope that justice is served swiftly.

Here in Chicago the guy that killed Bobby Cann is still free and lawyering his way through the system, trying to get his blood test results (way over the limit three hours after the crash) tossed on technicalities over the signing of the warrant. He doesn't dispute the actual result, as far as I know. The guy that killed Hector Avalos got 100 days for aggravated DUI (maximum available sentence, 14 years).

1. Farmers. For whom the pickup truck was designed in the first place. Beds are measured to fit bails of hay exactly packed a certain way.
2. Cowboys. Don't want that shoveled manure inside the vehicle with you.
3. Wanna Be Cowboys. Urban cowboys. Whatever you want to call them. A truck is the outside shell of a real man.
4. All The Rest. Pickup trucks were popularized by the auto industry as a bypass to the emissions standards. Trucks were exempt under many circumstances. So All The Rest of the unthinking knuckleheads who buy them are worse than #3 to me. There is not much (outside of manure) that wouldn't be happier inside a van. But marketing has very strong KungFu. How do you know which one you are?
Some may disagree. I don't care. Why do they sandwich pickup truck commercials between beer commercials all day during sporting events? Don't have to be a Nobel Prize winner to figure that out.

With the addition of that group and some others such as gardeners and landscapers with good reasons to drive pickups, I agree with the rest of the thread.
However, I disagree with the characterization of pickups as related to drinking. I suspect (only a suspicion, not offered as fact) that it's more a coincidence of geography. Pickups make up a larger portion of the fleet in more rural states, many of which have higher than the national average alcohol consumption. So in states like Michigan and Wisconsin drunks drive pickups, while in New York they drive SUVs.

Or in NYC drunks take the subway, bus or taxi/Uber. Other than being obnoxious and/or creating a mess a much safer method for everybody involved.

There is really no reason to stereotype pick up truck drivers. I will state that when I've been stranded on the side of the road, the motorists most likely to stop and offer help are the pick up truck drivers.

City-kids, mom/dad got them a shiney new pickup truck....and they tend to be loud and drive like dicks. They also tend to double-park their full-cabs in parking garages, because they're jerks.
Ranch/farm-hands/owners that'll follow you slowly up a hill and wait to pass when the line says, and then smile and wave as you go by. Not in a hurry to be anywhere, and seldom see any life on the roads-so anyone to wave to is a rare thing.
Around here, with a 5 minute education, you can guess both in advance by knowing state license-plate code.

The problem with backing in is that the car behind you watches you PASS the parking spot and assumes you don't want it. If they are driving a normal car they can just whip right in behind the pickup. Hence....using two spaces if you can find two together is the way to go. They are actually jerks for purchasing a car that can't be parked.
