Still happening?
Hi all, I recently purchased a Trek Domane AL 2, have ridden for maybe ~150 miles so far. Anyway this morning this exact thing happened to me, my front thru axle came loose. Didn't fall out or anything but the wheel started to wobble. Luckily I was on a flat, calm section of road. But damn if I was flying down a hill when that happened...
All I can assume is that either the bike shop did not adequately tighten it (they seemed pretty professional tho), or somebody maliciously untightened it/attempted to steal wheel...? It's the bolt type, torque spec is 10 Nm. I hand retightened it and rode back slowly lol. Guess I should invest in a torque wrench

Did this resolve or did you warranty your bike? The rear thru axle on my new Domane SLR keeps coming loose on its own even when properly tightened. I just took it back to my trek shop and I feel it needs to be warrantied

I’ve ridden almost exactly 35,000 miles on several different thru-axle bikes over the past 4 years. Never had a thru-axle loosen. Mine are generally torqued at 15nm. The drag on wheel bearings working against the threads is negligible.
Something else must be going on. Maybe the axles aren’t being fully torqued, or someone messed with axle or perhaps an alignment issue with the fork or drop out. Wild.

I would add something to reduce the possibility of the axle loosening, either blue, NOT RED, Loctite or just put a rub of beeswax on the threads. The beeswax acts like a thread locker but does not stick hard.

The general opinion seems to be that nobody is sure that the axles were properly tightened at the outset. Anyone who has had a problem will presumably pay more attention going forward, then we'll see if there is a problem apart from user error (or malicious interference). I'd suggest that anyone who may have a problem should check their axles not only before but also after every ride.

Down hill gravel/MTB/single track plays havoc on a bike.
