While on the subject of music while riding. What do you all think about a guy who plays music, loudly, from handlebar mounted speakers. He recently joined our informal group and he is annoying everyone not just with the volume of his music but with his music selection. We normally ride on backroads and quiet residential areas so the music blaring from his bike is jarring at best.

I use a Samsung YPU3, My Ipod Touch is too heavy and Big. I would put the Mp3 in the back of the jersey or pocket wire the headphones from the back. Only put one ear bud on since for safety reasons. Currently use with the UE 350 earphones very good isolation.

Oh, and for the OP:
I use an iphone in a heavy duty ziplock sandwich bag in the back pocket (mainly for ride capture and emergency calls) with ID, med card, CC, and a $20. If music then cord in R ear only.

I use a generic MP3 player and it goes in an "audio pocket" which most modern sportswear now has ...! :-)

I used to use an iPod shuffle but in the last few years, as the climbs have gotten harder on my aging body, I've found myself wanting to rip the buds out of my ears when I'm really hurting. I'd use it on recovery rides if I did them.

i use a cheap $50 usb mp3 player i bought back in college (about 6 years ago.) runs off 1 AAA battery and stores 1 gig of music, on shuffle. Just enough for me to listen to without getting bored. Its durable as hell and doesnt skip. Throw it in the back jersey pocket with the headphones run through my jersey and I am off.

Ipod + Nike Sport Armband.
Gonna give that 'strap the ipod to the helmet' trick a whirl, though.

Android phone in jersey pocket, cord through jersey. I tend to listen to podcasts when on recovery or commutes. Or Giants games through the MLB app. I have to be careful, though: a 9th inning comeback rally totally overcooked a tempo ride because I went over LT.

I rarely listen to music while riding anymore - but when I do, it's a cheap MP3 player ($30 Sandisk 40GB Sansa Fuse+) mounted to an elastic arm-band.
The other day, I saw a guy on one of my favorite MUP's with a home-made back-pack boombox, made from plywood, and had some 5.25" speakers and separate tweeters mounted in it. He was playing it at full volume so that everyone on the trail could listen to his favorite Dubstep tunes. I should have pulled out my phone and got a photo/video. The guy looked/sounded ridiculous.

I use an iPhone on an armband that way I have easy access to Strava. I dont use headphones and listen to music while I ride. I ride by myself 90 percent of the time so annoying others is not an issue. When I ride with others I skip the tunes.

Sansa Clip, clipped above my jersey zipper (in a section near the top where it's unzipped a little), or in my jersey pocket. I route the earphone cable through the jersey and only a little bit of excess cable is exposed outside of my jersey.

Samsung in ziplock in jersey pocket and this stereo bluetooth clipped to left sleeve of jersey. Cable runs under jersey, over base layer and comes out at my neck. I can answer calls too, and the base layer prevents the cable irritating my skin.
Added advantage is you can change the plugs to what you like, and when sweat ruins stuff, like it always does, the bluetooth itself is fine, and only the ear buds need to be changed. Having said that, my current buds are over 6 months now. My friends who use bluetooths which are built into the headphones have ruined them in 3 months or so.

I use a Sandisk Sansa mp3 player that operates on aaa batteries and a cool little speaker I purchased on eBay, both mounted to my handlebars. After years of trying to perfect this, I finally got it right. Now I can hear music clearly even with roaring traffic, yet still hear everything that might pose a hazard.

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
I used to bring my second-gen Shuffle on rides that way, too. I had some Shure earphones that had a two-piece cord, with a plug that stopped at the junction of the "Y" -- which was the perfect length to keep from having excess cord to deal with.

Old non touch screen Nano on an armband. It makes my left arm farmer's tan line not as sharp as the right one too.
I loves me some James Brown and Jamiroquai.
