Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

FWIW my only real cycling accident was on Diablo, up above the Junction, when a car decided to pass an uphill cyclist around a blind curve as I was descending. That sucked. But that was no fault of the bike or brakes.

Mt Diablo is pretty much the only thing I miss about CA, I hope to be able to get down there and ride it again soon! Although I will be on a disc brake gravel bike...

TO answer the original question, I would go CK/HED. Partially because that is just an awesome wheelset, partially because I just do not like Mavic, and lastly because of the constant descending. Sure, going around cars sometimes works, but getting stuck in a bad passing zone can force long periods of dragging the brakes on that descent.

I went with Belgium Plus + White Industries T11. Love the look of the Mavic wheels and I think they are great wheels but for climbing, alloy (Head Belgium Plus) makes more sense. I chose everything black - hub, the CX Ray Sapim spokes, nipples and skewers.
24/28 build

That's going to be a nice build. Post a pic later.

^ What he said. That's a very sensible-but-nice build that should serve very well for a looooong time.

Those wheels look awesome! (The bike too)
