Mikey, what you need to understand (and don't, because you don't live here, so again I kindly invite you to STFU) is that Central Park is not a normal road. It's often closed to cars, so that cyclists and runners can use the entire roadway. There is no cross-traffic, just the occasional pedestrian.
This is where cyclists train in New York City. It is literally the only viable outdoor option for many of us. We have used the park for this purpose for a very long time, whey they suddenly started handing out tickets, at 6am in January when it's below 20 degrees out and there are neither cars nor pedestrians using the park.
This isn't about running red lights on the street, in traffic, on normal roads, so stop having that argument, because it doesn't apply to this situation. I think it's stupid to hand out tickets for that, but rules are rules, and if I got one, I'd pay it and STFU about it. This is about suddenly taking away the one refuge that NYC cyclists have, for the sole purpose of generating money. It sucks.

On another note, what do you folks find to be your favorite cycling shoes? I think Gary prefers the Shimano 310s right? My Bonts are a little roomy in the footbox and tight across the top of the foot. My Mavic mtb shoes are much more slipper like.

I haven't tried very many brands, but I need a bit extra toe room and my Garneau shoes work for me. It's a matter of finding what fits you, not what fits other people.

Last night at my house we all had trouble sleeping.
My daughters, when restless at night, disregard any quiet approach when they come wake us - especially my oldest daughter.
Set the scene:
Dark, quiet house. My wife and I are slowly falling asleep. I can feel myself relaxing and my body getting heavy. Everything's at peace.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
"MOM! IT'S HOT IN MY ROOM AND I CAN'T SLEEP!!!" Not only does she talk like she's trying to speak to someone in a steel mill but she pushes our door open slamming it against the wall.
FFFFUUUuuuuuuuuuu!!!!! We both jump out of half-sleepidness and scream in fear. Our dog jumps out and shakes like he's getting out of the tub.
Daughter walks out. My wife gets up and resets the temp for the house. We settle back in. Both of us grumbling. I slowly start to fade away again.
.
.
.
.
.
.
"MOM!!1!!1! I STILL CAN'T SLEEP!1!!1"
SON OF A!!!!! My friggen heart leaps out of my chest like I was having a massive coronary.
My wife yells back something. The dog climbs back out and shakes again. He's all like WTF, man?!?
Daughter again: "Can I sleep with you?" Still talking loud as heck.
They finally decide to go out to the living room and sleep on the couches.
I settle back down. This time it's real hard. I'm having anxiety attacks like it's going to happen again. Slowly ... trying to calm myself.
It's getting there. Ok. Slowly winding down.
.
.
.
Relaxing.
<grumbling ... dern kids ... grrrr ....>

my suggestion would be:
make it as difficult as possible for the city to profit from this. if you get a central park ticket, fight it tooth and nail. never plead guilty. always go to court. tie up the courts as much as possible. make them work overtime. find every little tiny nitpick you can to get the ticket thrown out. force the officer to show up and defend his decisions.
etc

I like my Shimano shoes, both road and mountain. They seem to fit me fine. Never used Sidi or Spec, but I've tried Sidi on and they were too narrow. The Spec fit fine I think.

[Hand-wringing] My travel bike is a Bike Friday folder. It's about the geekiest damned thing around, but actually a pretty decent bike. Because of what I do, my travel bike has to be able to fly in a suitcase and pack up to be stored out of the way at times. The Bike Friday does this well. I've thought about getting something else because, although the Friday is OK to ride and does exactly what I need it to do, it's just hard to do when everyone that sees you laughs. Racer X's Ritchey Breakaway came and went. I was too slow. Now I've located a new Ritchey Breakaway Cross bike that could fulfill the same roll. With used stuff and parts I have already, I could probably be on the road for about $1200 total. I have to say, I've done some group rides with the Friday and it's somewhat fun to have people scratch their heads at you. Everyone assumes you're working a lot harder than normal because of the small wheels, but it's really not that big of a deal. The 'Cross bike is maybe a little better suited to the riding I end up doing, but in actual use, they would basically be the same. Should I go for the Breakaway or stick with my Friday? [/Hand-wringing]
One point about the Breakaway is there is an issue with it fitting in a airline compliant standard case. As the airlines get tighter, it could be a problem. for that reason, I'd lean toward a bike with S&S couplers.
