Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Or they are totally realistic and I can do 6.6 w/kg for 2 minutes.
I sure hope that's sarcasm.

Because you don't REALLY think a HR-based power guess is more accurate than a power calculation actually based on physics, now do you?

He might, but there's no way it can be done.
Heart rate and power simply aren't that connected to make measurements that way.
There are too many unknown factors, like whether or not you had a nice Belgian Triple just before your ride or not

  3. or if it's high and you're not fat, then you race stupid given the lack of results with your power.
  4. or your FTP isn't as high as you claim

None of the end points on the flow chart tend to reflect well on the poster.
My numbers are consistently lower than just about anything I read about on the interweb.

I have learned #1 from my powermeter. That was worth $1,000.00 to "know".

dude, you forgot to include the fact that you used your massive guads to drope the hamer on the fool somewhere in your post. Without that or getting bear hugged by a convenience store security guard, you fall short of the requirements needed to start a flameworthy thread on the 41.

Cyclops claims its within 5% of actual results, averaged over the whole ride. Obviously on a micro level it's going to be useless, but for calculating TSS acculumated over a ride I think the heartrate power strap will be very useful. I could see roadies using these when they're on their mountain bike so they can get a decent TSS figure. Time will tell how well the tech works. As long as the price is accordingly low I think it's a nice addition to the power meter lineup.

Average power over a complete ride ... okay maybe at 5%, but that's hardly a usable figure, is it?
Now that I'm getting into tri's I've started looking at heart-rate monitors with gps for speed and distance that are usable while running and cycling alike.

As I mentioned before, it'd be usable for calculating TSS which could help track training load and training stress balance. I'm guessing most people wont be using it in that way, but it's certainly a possible legit use of the tech.

Bummer to learn that the "a**hole roadie" phenomenon isn't only occurring in the US.
