Narrower/lighter than the CR18 rims, Sun M13-II rims can be found in a silver polished finish for pretty cheap. Maybe not the heft/longevity of the CR18 but I've built up a couple wheel sets with them, one set on a bike that sees a fair amount of gravel and has 35c tires shoe-horned on (probablypushing it a little bit there), and they've held up well. Look and finish, once you pull the ugly sticker, fit the 'vintage' aesthetic.

I looked up availability at QBP (a wholesale distributor) for CR-18s. In polished silver in 700C size that have both 32 hole and 36 hole in stock. One would have to order these through a bike store. They are out of stock on TB-14s in 700C in 32 hole (they don't carry other sizes or hole drillings) in silver and gray but have an abundance of black in 32 hole only on closeout. Another box rim in polished silver one might consider comes from Velo Orange. They have both the Voyager that is heavier and wider than the Pacenti Brevet and the Enterprise which is skinnier and lighter.

In the Netherlands, Marten Gerritsen is M-gineering. He is a fellow framebuilder I've visited several times on my way over to Ukraine. I taught him how to paint. He lives in the coolest little town. He specializes in touring frames and has an inventory of items used on them like SON hubs.

If I were you, I'd drop that requirement of silver color and consider hard-ano. That way, Wolber becomes an option. Their '80's offerings shed some weight in contrast to the earlier Wolber Super Champions.

32h looks similar to 36h, just a thought. There are far more silver rim 32h options out there if the hub isn't special.

I have no qualms with 32H, it just so happens my hubs have 36H

EDIT: pulled the trigger on some H+SON TB14 - got a pair of them for 96 € (incl. shipping) from our "craigslist". Quite the bargain, considering they were new. So if anyone wanna reccomend some lightweight spokes...

Another upvote for the TB-14, but they are at the high end price-wise. H Plus Son's Archetype is also a good rim. You might also consider the Kinlin ADHN or MLD. Apparently they are the same but the later replaced the former with a new part number. I've seen them for under £60 a pair which is less than half the price of the H Plus Son rims.

Not quite sub-500g but velocity dyads are a very durable rim. They come in at ~530g and I have put a lot of rough miles on a set with no need for truing at all.

Anyone know why Interloc got out of the rim business? Their Cadence was actually a polished version of the Kinlin XR19W.

Congratulations on getting the TB14s at a good price. As to spokes, I recommend Sapim Race. Despite the name, they are a good stainless steel double butted spoke for most purposes and offer a good balance between price and performance. I would also build a 36h rim 3x.

thanks - I've used those in the past, and was considering them already. 3x is what i will be doing, yes. I have no experience with other lacing patterns, and i think the Hub (shimano 600 ax) actually requires it, due to the weird drillings.

Another vote for Sapim Race. They build up nice, feel great and I can find them much cheaper than the comparable DT Swiss Competition.
