Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Aluminum is the new carbon?

So I'm just curious...

If you could choose ANY aluminum bike, what would you choose and why?

Only rule: The frame must be aluminum and not steel, titanium, carbon, or any other frame material or combination of materials (aluminum with carbon stays doesn't count).

Bonus points: What seatpost/stem/bar/wheels/component combo wouild you choose to go along with it?

Keep it fun!

I agree about the CADD, I also like the mid 90's to early 2000 european team frames like Colnago's Massi's Fondrest and others for there looks.

I approve this message

Mine would be a CAAD10-3 with 3T seatpost, stem, and bars. I would top it off with Boyd 44 carbon clinchers

I did, about 3 months ago...a CAADX cyclocross bike. Welds are not as smooth and pretty as the US made C'dales, but the ride is refined and power transfer amazing.

CAAD hands-down. Cannondale used to hand-craft the finest aluminum frames in the business.

CAAD10 in Gulf colors!!!!! Seriously, the CAAD10 is an amazing ride and a steal for the price point; what legends are made of.

Thomson masterpiece, thomson elite, carbon 3T ergonovas, reynolds attack or any low profile carbon wheelset, '13 force but w/ cdale hollogram crankset or 2nd hand red group.

All Van Dessels look great. I have an unpainted preproduction Rivet waiting to be built up. I was bummed that I couldn't get one with the paint job, but the price I paid for frame and fork was about what the fork alone goes for retail.

I really like my Raleigh Revenio 4.0. Very comfortable bike. Change out the wheels and it comes in at about 19lbs. Full Ultegra except for Tektro brakes at $1100 ain't bad.

I'm completely infatuated with gaulzetti Al frames. In my price range however, I'd probably go CAAD or Allez.

CAAD10 w/ Ui2 Groupset and 36/52 12-23 gearing....probably some Boyd 60mm tubulars as it is pretty flat around here.

Don't know as far as the competition is concerned, but I love my new CAAD 10-1!!! As for the build I would probably go Enve all the way, seat post, stem, bars, and wheels (either the SES 3.4 or the 6.7 clinchers) and the Cdale hollowgram crank with praxis charinrings.

As a caad rider I'm biased but does it actually fit the rules with the carbon fork? I have Zipp aluminum bars, stem, seatpost and aluminum rims too so the forks are the only carbon on the bike. Oh, damn the cranks too. Maybe I should get some hollowgram cranks.

Yep, Gaulzetti is the ultimate in aluminum road frames. CAAD is a great value, Fuji Roubaix is probably the big sleeper though. The best, Gaulzetti, I'd say.

An early 90's Trek might fit the bill, right down to the aluminum fork. BTW, if you ride a 58, I have a minty Klein Quantum Race that I'm thinking of selling.

Something custom, maybe a Tsunami. There is no point in buying an aluminum production bike right now unless you were after "cheap" over "performance".
