Correct me if I'm wrong, and I may well be, but doesn't this animal carry diseases?

The red squirrels around here are as big as cats.

My Benjamin .20, dispatches them quickly and easily.

I am guessing those would be a red variety of fox squirrels. The pine squirrels here are scrawny little things. The only fox squirrels I have seen here are Delmarva Fox Squirrels and they are on the endangered species list.

Most Cattle are tested before they are shipped to market.

Actually, Many might be more precise, I'm gonna feel good about the steak sandwich I just ate and stick with Most, however.

More like "a few" are tested before they are shipped to market. Mostly, the "inspection process" (which doesn't include any testing) is a rubber stamp..........

Thorough cooking kills tularemia bacteria in squirrels and other game - what does it do for all the hormones, et cetera in commercially raised livestock?

I remember squirrel tasting better than rabbit. But squirrel was messier and smellier to dress. If you're going to feed yourself on squirrel on tour, you'll need to upgrade your guerilla bathing techniques.

You must not be doing it correctly. Here's a tutorial:

To me , they always smelled like woodsmoke for some reason.

to eat acorns you need to soak out an offensive bitter from them with several rinses, but you can make flour and grub out of acorns.

and with acorn pancakes, the squirrels will just leap into the skillet.

i've had squirrel stew, muskrat, rabbit. most small game are agreeable in the stewpot.

I suggest if you are in such desperate need of protein, something has gone terribly wrong in a cormac mccarthy 'the road' kind of way, and more power to all of us.

Dealing with wild game in the middle of a bike tour? maybe in siberia, otherwise no thanks, i'll hit up the red owl.

on a raunchy side note, a woman and avid bicyclist i used to work with talked about 'squirrel tail', which is a lot more tasty.

to be honest, in my opinion, squirrel tastes about like hamburger. ate alot of the furry pests when i was a kid in southern MO. just make sure you clean it well and dont eat the eyes, they're crunchy.

Don't rats carry the plague? I guess that means no living in New York city.

Squirrels, are the most heavily hunted and consumed small game in NA. Just be sure to be wearing your helmet when you eat it, and you should be fine!

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Fully cooked, you don't have to worry. Just wear latex gloves cleaning the squirrel. You have a higher risk of Tularemia, just like rabbits, but again, that only affects the organs and not the meat. Wear gloves when cleaning and use good sanitation poractices. Watch for yellow spots on the liver.

I've had rabbit sausage in "real" casings. The casings weren't rabbit, though. That would make for some skinny sausages!

I love this thread, lots of fun. I got about halfway through before I went to google and typed:

"squirrel snare" which lead me to this. A lot more convenient than a shotgun. If I did that, though, I would definitely carry a Plan B dinner of some sort.

I guess the thing to do would be to set up a few snares as soon as you arrive at your campsite, then go about your business. If you catch something before dinner time, eat it. If not, well, there's always Plan B.
