Which bike for a hilly ride?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I would not hesitate to take the bike with the lower gearing, unless it is a total boat anchor.

It was a hilly ride, but 35 miles was a good introduction for me. I rode the lighter road bike, and kept a nice easy pace on the hills, never getting out of my saddle, until the last third of the "Wall", the last 18% grade to finish a 2 mile climb. While tough, it was "fun" to grind out the last bit standing out of the saddle. My son just spun up ahead of me, and waited at the top. There were many riders walking , as I slowly made my way up. I was proud of myself ! Next year, the 62 mile route. It was a fun ride.

And you should be. Sounds like you had a good time working hard. So why wait until next year?

Shoot, the season is just beginning. Plenty of riding to do. We're even considering doing the same ride, if we get back to that part of the state. We kept the map, and the roads are well marked.
