So what kind of gearing does your 20 lb 700c x 23 aluminum bike have? 50/34, 11-28 gearing is what most 20 lb 700c x 23 aluminum bikes have isn't it?

It has 50/34 11-25. So yeah pretty similar. Actually I was thinking it might even be better with MTB gearing for trails, hills, etc. A 9-speed XT cassette offers 11-32 or 11-34 even.

I am seriously looking at the new SRAM Apex for my climbing bike. 11-32 cassette has wider gear ratio than most popular 3 ring/11-28 gear sets and blows my 12-25 away from these hills out here.

I just pre-ordered an On-One Dirty Disco carbon cyclocross frameset to supplant my '05 Cannondale six13 R5000 DuraAce as my daily commuter as I have found that my six13 is just taking too much of a beating.

Now the fun part of shopping for all the components comes next...

I am thinking Chris King hubs, Avid BB7s disc brakes, SRAM Force group. Not sure on the handlebars or wheels yet.

I‘ve been considering a Surly Troll with 26” wheels as adventure touring/commuter bike…but honestly, my Vaya does a great job at everything. Around town, touring, off road, etc. Stupid bike is causing me to not want/need another bike. What kind of dirty trick is that? I might try to improve the Vaya this winter….maybe add Woodchipper bars, bar ends, a new rear rack, etc?

As a side note, I lucked into a nice year old complete Ultegra group for $300 recently, so that might justify the need to build another road bike? Maybe a Litespeed Xicon?!?

My commuter bike, a Jamis Aurora, has limited tire clearance on the rear so I'm limited to 700x32. Normally not a problem since I ride on 700x28, except for winter when I want to mount fat studded tires. So I'm building up a winter commuter bike. Picked up some used parts (Nashbar frame and fork, Shimano crankset, brake levers, seat post), bought some new parts (handlebars, bar end shifters, stem, inline brake levers, canti brakes, FD), and re-using some older take-offs (RD, wheelset, cassette, Brooks saddle). Still need to get a rack and fenders, already have Nokian W240 700x40 ready to go.

Still putting things together so here's a picture in mid-assembly. Obviously some parts still missing, and the wheels are temporary, but I think I like where things are going. :-)

I had just put the finishing touches on my main commuter (1987 Miyata One Twelve) by building up a new front wheel with a Shimano DH-3N80 Dynamo connected to a B&M Lumotec IQ Cyo headlight when I happened on a 1987 Trek 520 for sale on CL. I run fenders on the Miyata and can JUST barely fit 700x35's under them, so I have been looking for an alternative that would allow me to used studded tires in the winter. Voila', the huge clearance and canti brakes on the 520 are perfect. So, I now have shimano bar end shifters coming to me from Rivendell, interrupter levers, Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires, and new Shimano clipless pedals coming from Amazon, and all should arrive sometime next week. I can't wait to put it all together! I still need to order some new fenders from Velo-Orange and I will be on the lookout for at least a new 700c rear wheel to replace the old freewheel style one I have on there now. When it is all said and done, I expect it to be a pretty sweet ride that will rival the Miyata as my daily commuter choice.

I plunked my $300 deposit on a Singular Gryphon frame, and ETA is in mid-November. Next purchase is a seatpost, and I have everything I need for the build. I can't wait!!!!

Given space and budgetary constraints, I tend to think in terms of projects/tinkering I can do to upgrade or improve the bike I have, esp. now that my (one and only) bike is built on a Surly LHT frame.

Projects I have in mind:

*building a new front wheel around a dynamo hub and installing compatible lighting
*trying out a drop bar setup for my LHT (I've got trekking bars at the moment)

If I were to aquire a "new" bike at this time it'd probably mean tracking down a good Peugeot frame and building up a single speed. That's what I have in mind as a potential secnd bike for the stable.

Might get another light. The Cygolite Expilion 400 looks tempting as a helmet light. This would be a third light for those totally dark unlit trails, to give a little boost in range. Not really much else on my wishlist . . . kinda sad, I know.

I built one of those! Super fun! But sold it...

Currently have a S2C on a R20 folder and it is my go-to town bike.

Next purchase for my commuter will be 12-36 cass. and a long cage derailleur.

My next and FINAL upgrades to commuter will be acquiring an Alfine 11 and a dyno hub with accompanying lights. Then I swear to God that I'm done upgrading the c'muter, for real this time no take backs.

Of course, I plan on stealing the rims from the 'cross bike for the Alfine/dyno wheelset, and I want to build a lighter and lower spoke count to replace them, so that'll necessitate new rims and hubs for the 'cross bike. And I was thinking of picking up a rear brifter as well, which would require a new rear brake. Also would like to pick up a Thudbuster for the mountain bike. And a fat bike. And a longtail or a long john cargo bike. And maybe a fixie, just to try it out and see if I like it...

But after new wheels and lights, I'm done with the c'muter, I promise. Cross my heart and hope to not go broke.

My latest build is my new winter bike that will take over from my Shasta... transferred the 3 speed winter wheels into the new old frame and fork and built it up with spare parts I had in the shop.

I finished moving some parts to a newer Fuji frame after I crashed the old one. For this one I added some newer brake levers, Tektros, which I really like. I also ponied up for some Silver DT shifters, which I also really like.



For my next project, I am going to build another wheel like this one with another dynohub. For my winter bike. I may pony up for a B&M front dynolight too 'cause I really like not futzing with batteries all the time.

Assuming insurance comes through as they should, I'm looking at a Fuji Cross 2.0 for my new commuter. The Schwinn didn't get too banged up in the accident but I wouldn't mind putting it behind me. Probably won't be till after the first of the year but I won't be able to ride till then anyway so it will give me something to work towards.

The price of the Pug is tough to justify, but after testing one, I ride it in my dreams every night. Selling my car soon. I was gonna buy a crappy old 4wd, but the Pug could probably be a better investment.

I feel your pain... I bought a 1989 Trek 800 Singletrack Antelope for $40 to turn into a "winter beater". Since then, I've stripped it, painted it with tri-color iridescent lime green paint (Dragonfly Green, we call it) for visibility, put on new V-brakes, nokian studded tires, and am working on an IGH wheel right now (Alfine 8-speed, I think). Turns out this bike, my "beater", will probably be better than half of the other bikes in the stable. I'll bet it'll be close to $800 by the time I finish... oops.
