Who's ready for another long cold miserable winter?

According to the Old Farmers Almanac this coming winter is gonna be even colder and longer then last years. Lucky for me I live in California and own a car.
But I feel for you brave souls who live car free and debend on your ride to get around. Actually I feel sorry for anyone who lays in the paths of the coming Polar Vortexes. For them it's going to be a very long bitter winter. Godspeed.

I rode it out last year with just my road bike. This year I'm getting my faired bike into shape, which is much easier in the bitter cold. I was hoping for a milder winter, but like the Almanac I'm expecting the worst.

I'm going to go touring this winter to take advantage of time when cowards and dolts stay inside because they don't want to wear more clothes.

And then there are some who welcome winter riding since its far less technical than actual mountain biking and also a lot safer. I just wish we'd have more trails but I think I'll manage with the ones we have. And winter is the time for skiing which is also awesome! And you can wear fantastic clothes (lets face it, winter clothes just look much better than summer clothes)

I welcome the cooler weather but I don't want to have to get tights.

Farmers Almanac is just as accurate as your daily horoscope...I am up in Canada so I know all about harsh cold winters, I am also car-free and I bike all year round. Last years winter was brutal. I am ready.

Californians complaining about the "winter" -- that's always rich.

It can snow all it wants, I just don't want it to be as cold or windy as it was last winter. Actually cold isn't so bad on its own, just not cold and windy at the same time.

I don't put a lot of stock in farmers or meteorologists' ability to predict the weather. They are only like 25% accurate 3-5 days out, let alone months ahead of time. How many times have they predicted record hurricane years since Katrina? Hasn't happened.

Happily, spring started last week.

And if any of you wintery northern hemisphere folk want a break from your long cold miserable winter ... summer starts on Dec 1 over here.

I'm not ready... mentally; but only insofar as the snowbirds are concerned -- wintery weather (such as it is, down here, is welcome). That is, the volume of South Florida traffic will increase dramatically, as will the proportion of nearly-blind and vertically-challenged drivers. I shall wear even brighter, higher-visibility clothing (as if that's possible). It's "Hill Street Blues", all over again: Be careful, out there.

Interestingly, here the days of particularly challenging weather are specially quiet. Those who can afford not driving stay away from the roads and those who drive are extra cautious, making it comfortable for cyclists. On the other hand, an average winter day tends to be so-so, with cars wobbling and inexperienced drivers often failing to adjust their driving to the combination of their skills and circumstances. The latter is particularly true in the early days of the season.

Dude, I live in Florida; therefore I welcome the winter I actually ride less during the summer due to the extreme heat.

The long cold miserable winter just started here in Calgary. We had + 27 C (80 F) and sunshine here yesterday, but right now I am staring at 5 inches of snow on my back deck. Uggh. Not the most pleasant bike commute to work today, but on the upside, probably WAAAYYYYY better than all those people driving their cars in this mess!

Bring it, Winter! Last year was my first winter back in the Upper Midwest in over a decade, and it was a nice welcome home present!

I honestly don't mind "bad" winter weather. It's kind of fun to dress up like an alpine explorer just to get to work or go get groceries. My main complaint about winter is that it's still too HOT at work...

I live in Michigan, I actually like riding in the winter, I feel empowered, strong and young(I am 61).

I doubt if it will be as bad as last year, but if it is, I will ride when ever I can. It is ok to ride when very cold, it is ok to ride when snowing, but if it is really cold with snow on the streets, it is almost impossible.

Looking forward to trying the new studded tires. The dressing up and dressing down is somewhat of a pain. I really don't like getting grime on the bike. Quiet Winter mornings when everything is still are pretty nice.

Winter, a mixed bag, but I'll take it on again.

Edit: The best part is not having to scrape the windshield. Or is it watching others scrape theirs?

I'm pretty accepting and tolerant of winter, except for the increased time to dress. I'm actually looking forward to plowing and gently slip-sliding on studded tires in new-fallen snow (but not on a road bike with skinny tires as depicted below).

Boston is known world-wide for its Winter Cycling :-)

+1 to all the above. My pristine carbon fiber bike goes into hibernation from mid-December to April, and I ride the heavy mountain bike.

When cagers rib me about winter riding, I tell them it’s more tolerable to get right on the bike and ride, than to sit in a cold car until it warms up (beyond the scraping and shoveling of the car). And I look forward to that perennial winter commuting question, "You didn't ride your bike today, did you?."

CA ha,ha. How's that drought going, or earthquake or wildfire? Wait, what about those landslides. Here in the Boston MA area, we like the 4 seasons. As opposed to dry or winter rain. I feel sorry for you. We have fat bikes, studded tires, fleece and wool. And a big glass of HTFU. Plus post ride bourbon.

around this time of year i start thinking about xc skiing

and people might start to think I am losing my marbles
because when I walk
whenever I think about it
i exaggerate the backward movement of my legs
until i feel my hip flexors stretching
to get my legs ready for kick and glide

also this year
i am going to figure out a good way to carry skis with my bike
possibly using my old chariot trailer
as the ski trails are just a few blocks away
and i dislike walking in my ski boots
even more than i dislike walking in my cycling shoes
