You don’t actually have to put the tape on the frame. Put it on the inside of the clamp, wrap it over to the exposed side of clamp to cover the edges, and if you’re clever, trim it so very little of the tape is exposed. That way, no adhesive is in contact with paint. And if you use a thick clear tape, I have some from putting an AC in a window, it’s barely visible
A beautiful restored bike deserves original stuff.
This is 1970.

Hello friends, I am finishing up the restoration of my 1970 PX-10, this is the first bike I have restored without bottle cage bosses and I'm looking for some help. I spent long hours getting the paint looking as good as I could so the idea of clamps on the frame has me very uneasy. The handlebar mount below looks like a good solution, I may have to get creative with 23.5mm bars but I suspect I could get it snug with a little effort/ingenuity. Anybody have experience with these or have suggestions on a better option? I would love to go vintage but the price tag so far has been more than I want to spend.

Zefal plastic clamps hold reliably, kept both cages away from the dt decal.

disclaimer: it helps to have bought the stuff a couple of decades ago, or perhaps longer.
The T.A. bar cages are simple and effective, and even have a little loop of wire sticking up in front that helps guide the bottle back in.
I've been pretty squeamish about bolting a cage to the downtube of my pristine copper-coloured Raleigh International, but I didn't worry as much about the brown International that I used to own. On this bike, I used the T.A. Competition (ref. 216). It is fairly unique, in that it has a single wide clamp band that holds the cage's wires. It looks cleaner than the two-clamp types, and I think there is less chance of marring the paint (especially when you put some tape on the inside of the clamp band).

Simple and less cluttered front bottle cage. Only works with stem having the horizontal bar clamp bolt. The stock stem bolt is replaced with same but longer. A spacer fits in the stem recess and the adapter mount, then the clamp bolt is inserted and tightened. Fits most conventional bottle cages. Very solid and no drooping or rotating movement.

I use a strip of inner tube under clamps to protect the paint - kickstand clamps too. Sometimes it's a little annoying to get it to stay in place while you tighten the clamp, but I prefer not to have to deal with the glue residue from tape. It seems to work well, but I haven't been doing it long enough to know if the tubes break down or cause problems over the long haul (decades). Is there some reason why nobody else does this?

I've been using inner tubes under clamps for years. I've never noticed any issues.

I just polish the clamps, especially the edges, so they're smooth and can be mounted without damaging anything. Here are some VO clamps on my beautiful '72 Torpado.
