Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I may take the new bike out for a shakedown cruise this afternoon. Gonna be kinda warm, but what the hell? Nobody lives forever, right? I don't have a spare set of Looks for it, though, so it'll be sneakers and flats.

My club has a century tomorrow with 9000 feet but it's going to be 103 again. I think I'll do the shorter ride which goes west to a cooler area.

I located the tiller plans, and ordered a closet door roller to guide the line that raises and lowers the rudder blade. The plans seem to call for a 25.4ish pulley, but I've ordered a 31.8. I'll just make sure the excess sticks out below the tiller so things look clean. I'll probably have to place it further aft than it is on the plans so the pulley doesn't drag on the tiller sleeve (or whatever they call that piece of metal), so I'll taper a bit more of the tiller than the plans call for.

Daughter's softball team is playing in a Nationals qualifying tournament, which will have us on the road about the time the sun is rising tomorrow morning. If things go well, I won't get on the bike at all this weekend. If things go poorly, I'll be doing a moderate-paced group ride on Sunday morning. The last couple of weeks have been packed with her softball activities, and my bike mileage is WAY down. About half of that riding time has been on my singlespeed MTB. I don't go very far or very fast on that thing, but it sure is a ton of fun. Meanwhile, the kid is getting some serious interest from a few colleges. I'm extremely proud of this girl for the dedicated hard work she has put into her game over the last 8 years to become a powerful force on the field, on both sides of the ball. It's looking promising that she can leverage her softball skills into getting her college education paid for (or at least mostly paid for).

Here's a taste of my girl doing some of her favorite things...

That's what bothers me too. He's got a sloping top tube frame...

That guy needs to get a different bike!

They just added a remote start, West L.A. to Palos Verdes. I'm thinking about it but I don't like riding over there.
