Put a hollowtech II crank and bb that matches your bb shell and be done with it. Or whatever other brand you prefer with similar design to hollowtech II.

My plan is to ride this bike and its square-tapered, 5-arm crankset into the sunset. Probably have to re-grease the BB one more time before the Final Mile, or twice if I'm lucky.

BCDrums I love your characterization. Their third hand tool is (was?) also unsurpassed. I worked in bike shops from 1978-1984, so there were a bunch of VAR tools.
Yeah, it took Shimano a while to make a true improvement. Octalink I and II were failures, but I have to admit, Hollowtech II is practical. Still, square taper has some advantages, such as having a degree of interchangeability.
