Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After yesterday's walk - when it wasn't even 90 - the Greyhound in the pic I posted was panting like mad. So I spritzed him with a water bottle, and wet him all over with a wet towel.

Interesting; it's only my rears that get squared off anyway. Must be my pavement-melting watts fat ass.

My rear tire is as squared off as it's going to get (didn't yet swap it out, despite the previous grumblings), but I still don't notice it when cornering. Maybe it's the newfangled, wide and low pressure tires/rims?

Many years ago, like 39 seasons ago, I noticed that my rear was squared. Being a penniless newbie cyclist, I thought it would be smart to rotate the squared tire to the front. Handling was definitely affected. Over the years, I tried it maybe 2-3 times again but decided the "feeling" of a squared off tire on the front wasn't worth the miserly savings. Then Sheldon confirmed my decision with an article on his site about rotating tires. Haven't done it since. No point.

Can't say as I ever noticed a squared off tire on the rear causing problems.

I'm planning on a century today... or maybe just a metric... or maybe just a 1/4 century with my wife.

Yeah, I don’t notice anything, but my bike handling isn’t stellar.

Actually, in that instance you may legally ride in the middle of the lane if there is no shoulder, and a motorist is responsible for creating the 4'.

I'd share my view from breakfast, but my desk is a mess.

The coffee this morning, though? Excellent. First espresso shots pulled with the scale/timer. Over the years, I think I'd slowly drifted in to the habit of running the shot long and the volume high; tightened up, it was great straight (I usually do lattes and the milk can mask various sins).

Whoops. Got a few miles in to my ride, feelin' light and lively, and then I realized why I felt so unencumbered - I'd forgotten my helmet.

I decided to cut the ride short but still get in a few 30-60 second efforts to make the ride feel worthwhile.
