I also just used a 16mm socket with a ratchet when in the shop. Of course, the trick was finding a 16mm socket at that time (mid 70's), since most socket sets didn't include it. No idea why that was.
I sold the Gran Sport in the early 90's, and gave the Stronglight remover to a friend in the next 10 years. No particular regrets, as the relative unavailability of the unique Stronglight BCD rings drove me towards things like the Sugino AT with 110/74mm rings.

I had one of these tools for the Stronglight 93 on my Raleigh Gran Sport, and the rod was a simple cylinder. No features that limited its movement in the tool or engage with anything else. It did work fine, not unlike the nifty Sugino tools that include the socket with the remover.
I also just used a 16mm socket with a ratchet when in the shop. Of course, the trick was finding a 16mm socket at that time (mid 70's), since most socket sets didn't include it. No idea why that was.

When I needed some lower gearing for the Hetchins, I sort of split the difference between French charm and Japanese sensibility by getting the SunXCD clone of the TA Cyclotouriste. The T.A. chainrings are still in production and the cranks are modern forgings with quality stainless fasteners. Ended up using a cup & cone Specialized BB that I had in the parts box. Seems to be just fine, and looks as shiny as the Stronglight 93! The puller threads are the Japanese standard.
The Hetchins is now sporting a SunTour Cyclone GT derailleur, just like the Gran Sport did!

While the gears are low I'm not going full touring setup with this. 14-30 6 speed and 38-52 for the crank. This bike is pretty light for having cheap plastic fenders and a rack. It also handles a lot like the grand record. Dives into corners if you want that sort of thing and climbs to beat the band. 38-30 is a pretty low gear but it really pulls better than I thought it might. Euro spec 531 for the win!
