Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I’ve owned a few sets of Fulcrums and have been very happy.
I'm looking at replacing the Ritchey's old wheels with Fulcrum Racing 4s, rather than building what would be the 3rd wheelset on the original 7400-series Dura Ace hubs. The cost is similar, once you figure in the rims, spokes, nipples, and the tools I don't yet have.

Oh, and the old wheels are 32 spoke, so they're not very aero. Better than all my C&V bikes with their 36-spoke eggbeaters, though!

That is fantastic (not the expense; Mrs. GeneJockey's health). Mrs. Badger's was in 2012/13, preceded by thyroid c. in '09. She has since been clear, on the 'c' front. '21 (annus horribilus) brought her yet another little challenge, but she carries on; a trooper if ever there were one.

Many of my bicycle related ideas, including wheel building and riding steel bikes, are directly related to my pay grade.

Wheel build vs buy a set depends on the situation for me. If I find some $100 rims on sale for $40 I'll look for a deal on hubs and pick up some spokes. I also built a couple of front wheels when Campagnolo Record hubs were on sale for $40ish.

If I can find a decent set of wheels cheep, I'll go for them. Thinking about getting another set of these before they disappear. Pretty good wheels for $210. Tubeless + Rim brake + QR is a pretty rare setup these days so it's nice to have some available off the rack.

Better idea yet sell the D/A hubs on evil bay and throw that cash at the fulcrums

gorgeous song. Those 50's vocal groups were special. The vocal group hall of fame used to be, and still might be, in Sharon, PA right by my hometown.

Building anything is overrated. Let someone who is good at it do it, and then pay with a smile.

Most projects cost me more than I would spend to hire it done anyway.

And, some gramma age women can still dance a mean dance.

The first set of wheels I ever built have remained true and tensioned, even on our rough roads.

But, you should totally get the Fulcrums.

Not yet. These wheels wouldn't exist if I didn't build them:

650b, 36°, fixed/fixed bolt on 120mm rear; 36° bolt on 100mm front

Also another vote for buying the Fulcrums.

I'm going to be replacing the rims on the Holdsworth. I'm kind of nervous doing the work since they are 20°F/24°R. I've never built anything with that low spoke count before.

Tensioning is more fun down at the shop. They have a fancy DT Swiss tensiometer. I just have the Park TM-1 at home.
